There was a TV show on a while back where they went over old advertisements. The winner was the ad for the original Volkswagon Superbeetle. Does anyone remember this one? Lots of snow and a snow plow. The voice over asks, "What does the man who drives the snow plow drive to get to the snow plow?" Then the plow drives away and you see the little VW Bug sitting there. It was great.

My favourite ads were probably the original Tango ads with the fat orange man running around at high speed slapping people! Genius!

Didn't they get banned or something? I remember it was all the rage - lunatics going round slapping each other round the face, so apparently they prohibited the advert from being shown.

I also remember one advert that only showed twice for some shampoo product that actually showed a topless woman. I can't remember any other advert that's shown a naked woman before in England, (top fully exposed). I must say that was my favourite advert :D

There was also that advert jingle: "knock me down with a feather, clever trevor".. if anyone remembers it?

The Tango ad did get banned and they ended up changing it so that the fat orange guy kissed people instead of slapping them!

"All time" stretches back to the '50s.
My favourite ad is the Irish Lotto one where the monks win and, vow of silence & all that, can only jump around the place. Head Monk enters the hallway & glares at them. One approaches him, holds up a placard saying : "WE'VE WON !". He then holds one up saying : "What about your vow of poverty ?" to which the junior monk says : "AH F-". The scene cuts to the Lotto logo so's we don't hear the "-uck !" Class.

My favourite ad campaign was Unigate Dairies' Humphries!

You never saw them, just their red and white striped straws nicking someone's milk!

Watch out, watch out, there's a Humphrey about!

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I'll nominate a Carling Black Label advert from the mid '80s.

It began with a weedy cowboy lassooed by a gang of thugs. He then ran off, still tied up, and dragged them all along behind him. Cue 'I'll bet he drinks Carling Black Label'. The real genius was the advert after it. Two women in a supermarket talking about washing powder. One woman removes a box from the shelf, only to see the cowboy from the previous advert now in this one, still being chased by the thugs. It continued into the third advert that followed, it was an advert for some romance compilation album, set in a garden. Suddenly, the cowboy bursts through the hedges, still dragging the thugs behind him.

The first time I saw it was recorded on VHS, and I was so shocked by it being 'three ads in one' I must have watched it ten more times, and countless others afterwards. Anybody else recall this advert? None of my friends my age remember it, and I'm starting to feel I'm delusional and the whole thing is a horrid David Lynch psychosis.

I remember those adverts. Fantastic. Wasn't it the oblivion boys that used to star in them (well the one's that were apart from the action and said "I bet he drinks Caling Black Label")? The one that sticks in my mind was the dambusters one where the nazi guard plays goalkeeper with the bouncing bombs.

My all time favourite ad is a fairly recent one, it was the Rube Goldberg device made up from car parts that lasted for a couple of minutes in one take. I think it was for the Honda accord or something. And then I remembered that this site is for retro stuff and got to thinking what my favourite ad from the 80's was. I think it would have to be the Maxell cassette ad with Pete Murphy. Very, very cool and very simple too.

You can see some of those Carling ads over at TV Ark. It's in Real Media format, but watchable...

Another favourite advert of mine from the '80s was for shell. It starred a younger Kevin Whately driving his family in a car through a long, dark tunnel of trees at night, Suddenly, animated gjosts and monsters started drifting around the car, with haunting music playing. Of course they got through, and as they drove out from the tunnel, the familiar tagline appeared: 'You can be sure of Shell'.

Anybody else remember that one?

Just about my favourite ad of all time is ironic, as I disapprove of tobaco in all it's forms.
Twas a hamlet ad.

This guy has a Ford Anglia with furry dice and all that malarky. But he gets a delivery, and it's a set of "Carlos Fandango Super Wide Wheels", all in huge boxes. For some reason best known to himself, he fits them in a field. And these wheels and tyres are sooo huge and wide that they are about two feet out on either side of the car! Absloutely enormous! So he jumps in and zooms the car though the gate, but the whole car is too wide now and the wheels are ripped right off again, flying off in all directions!! Then , as he no longer has control of the motor it careens across the farmyard and straight into a barn. Straw and chickens go everywhere. And as he sits there, he lights up the good ol' smokey stick of death. ;) :D

Searching for this ad brought me to this very website this very evening by the by.

I can remember the advert with the jungle animals on, It used to have a lion on it, thats the one that was howling, it was called Jeremy, it used to say 'Jeremy's got a roaring toothache again, im not suprised he eats too many sweets and never cleans his teeth' then one of the other animals looks at Jeremy's tooth and says 'tut tut you will have to go to the dentist'. I think the advert was for reminding parents to make sure their kids cleaned their teeth.

not really, its a cultural thing. The idea is that you get a pint of guinness, the 'rich dark flavour' - sit back, relax and let the world go by.

I actually did find it worked, its a pleasurable drink but definitely not to be rushed. Not had one for a while since I stopped smoking ages ago, it does put weight on but is very good for the blood!

There is a bloke and a woman in what I seem to remember as some kind of airport hanger (that may be totally wrong, but I was only a kid at the time!) and I think she might ask him for something (or something like that) and he recognises her name and says something along the lines of "I remember you, you were in my class" and she says "No, I was your teacher". At the end hes stuck to the side of a Lorry by his shoes and hes screaming and his head bounces off a Lamp post, that was one of the funniest ones ever, It was only about 8 years ago if anyone else can remember this, or know what it was advertising or even better know a website i could see it again i would love to know.

I liked Frank Muir in the Cadbury's 'Everyones a fruit and nut-case'

I still remember the words to 'Milk chocolate Minstrals made to enjoy anywhere, any time you want to. Wherever you are whatever you do, take a bag along with you, Milk chocolate Mintrals made to enjoy anywhere.' which annoys my kids as I have to singe every time we buy some.

I also love the Heineken refreshes the parts . . . series and Leonard Rositer and Lorraine Chase in the Campari adverts.

One of the best ads, for me was for shampoo, can't remember which one, Wash & Go, I think. Where a gorilla climbs into a mans room while he's asleep and just plain mess's the fellows hair up. The morning result being totally hideous, to which the guy reaches for his wash & go. There's just a short scene were the gorilla uses the guy as a vacuum which just plain cracks me up.

The Smash adverts from the 70s with the Martian robots were great.
So were the various Milk Tray ads (e.g. skier).
Who can forget the Ronco ads (e.g. spark plug cleaner, roller measure, battery tester, record vacuum) that tended to air around Christmas time with the tag line "Perfect Christmas Gift".
Each Christmas in the late 70s and early 80s Woolworths tended to do some really long Christmas adverts e.g. Have a Cracking Christmas in 1981.

Back then the only way to watch TV was directly off-air, so when the ads were on within or between programmes, you had to just sit through them, so over time you tended to see the same ones again and again, and some really stood out from the crowd to become unforgettable 30 years later.

In 20 or 30 years time, will anyone remember any adverts from the present day? Does anyone bother watching adverts these days? Nowadays, I usually record programmes on commercial channels and see them later, so I can fast forward the adverts.

I HATE modern ads....they are irritating and awful 99.9% of the time. I absolutely despise Chris Marshall in those BT Infinity ads, AND the woman in them, shes so precious and snotty in real life, once when I was doing work experience at Starcom, the media planners (load of rubbish to make money when Ad execs could EASILY do that work to, i.e. 'where do we show this ad: on tv? in a mag? on a billboard etc?) I saw her outside - WITH TWO BURLY MINDERS....as if anyones going to go gaga over her?! I don't CARE about their characters....hes a muppet, apparently an 'ordinary 'bloke' you'd 'go down the pub with' etc...Shes the sort of single Mum you'd like as a nice female friend....I wanted to SLAP the skinny one in the 'lads day out ad' they did...

Car ads these days, are ****. Sorry, but tis true. Theres only been a few that are nice. The problem is they've been 'feminised' even the cars that are usually more appealing to men...The latest BMW is a good illustration of this dross. Music in ads? Only once in a while you hear a tune you really want to hear all of...the rests irritating.

AND AD BREAKS?! They go on and on now and I definitely change channel or fast forward if I've used sky + pause or record!

Ads I have liked of recent times were:

'evolution/Noitulove' by Guiness, BT 500, very funny, the latest Yell.com ad inverting and modernising the classic 'J R HARTLEY' into 'DAY V LATELY'...only peeps who recall the original will smile at that...

Odd now, I can't really remember others I like thesedays....shows how rubbish ads are now.

The one when a black bloke has a pair of magnetic Shoes and hes walkin down the street and has money and stuff attaching to them, then a girl with a pair of braces on her teeth becomes attached to them and they get married.

It was for that credit card, egg.com or the one with one side that was curved and the other was normal...mint I think.

The 'Irn Bru' 'made in Scotland from Girders ad was wicked. Thanks for the upload - when I saw it again after all these year I instantly remembered the song and could sing it word for word...Thats what you call great advertising. Loved how they lampooned the Coke ads of the time....and the end bit where the vending machine nuts the guy....he heee!

I loved Tufty ads. Even though I'm a bloke I still like soft toy animals. So?! If its problematic imagine the Irn Bru machine being me and thee being the bloke....They used to repeat them in the 1980s. The innocence of the ads and the on going naughty Willy Weasel getting injured...

Smash, Milk Tray ads with the nutty Australian Milk Tray Man model doing all those stunts (its true), PG Tipps Chimps ads, one of my Dads faves - even though he was never usually interested in ads or brands etc - was the 'This ain't blinkin' Calais'...

Having seen the Brooke Shields Calvin Klein Jeans ads - which warmed my reptilian cool blood no end.... :), reiterates my point, you can see the male dominant ad industry in its content....while men and women should work equally, I do still feel ads today are on the whole bland, a waste of money and time...too 'pc' (hate that term though)....I also loved those BT ads with Maureen Lipman, can still remember the one: 'An Ology?! Anthony! You get an Ology, your a scientist!'

No they aren't but annoying as hell aren't they? The only one I liked was the one with the OAP ones, ones deaf as a post....The reason being is the scruffy one who gets annoyed looks like my Dad these days and the smart one who first mistakes then jokes about the name of the site is a bit deaf like my Dad an all..My Mum had a surreal sense of humour and if she'd seen these ads she'd definitely have taken the michael out of my old man and said thats him...and as a kid if she saw the ones with the annoying brats....

I seem to recall a commercial for DHL from, I believe, the '90s. It depicted a French delivery driver (evidentally representing the competition) malingering in an empty sidewalk cafe in Paris and he's totally indifferent to the fact that his van, which is parked across the street, is being towed away and as it is all the packages fall out of the back.

My other half loves the McEwens Lager AD from the 80's, the one where people are pushing these concrete boulders inside a clock tower.

For me it has to be this advert for McEwan's lager from the 80's as mentioned by spuggybridge:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFclpprR48c

The music is by Win and the vid is inspired by the artwork of M C Escher. It's an amazing ad.

Back in the day before youtube I spent years trying to find the music from this. None of my friends or family remembered the ad and any record shops I went to to try and find the song just looked at me as if I was insane. I finally found the album (Uh, Tears Baby) about 10 years ago. This is the best song on it.

Hope someone else remembers it with me :)

Cheers,

Not really 'great' adverts but I do like the Country Crisp ads at the mo with the little animals and voice overs. Theres a funny follow up ad of the chubby mouse type thing and she shouts out NUUUUTTTTTSSSS! at the end. I also like some of the Aldi ads, the nicest one at the moment is the Easter one with the little girl and the dog - like the way the dog leans forward to let her put the bunny ears on. Then theres the Netflix ad with the little mice in houses and you can see they even have cars built around that plastic ball they walk around in that rolls as they walk.

Some of my favourite ads of old are the John Smiths ads with the old man and dog, was surprised many were made in the 70s and still repeated in the 80s, the Carling Dambusters one, the Kit Kat panda's one at the zoo with photographer who turns around and the pandas start larking about, the Smash robots, Homepride ads with the flour men also spring to mind... Tufty Squirrel ads, Charlie Says...I did also find the old Terry's Chocolate Orange ads with the old man doing an Indiana Jones style pastiche to get it in suburban settings memorable.
