Where did you go on holiday as a child? How did you spend those long glorious days of the summer holiday off school?

We only went away once and that was to Berwick-upon-Tweed to a two bedroom caravan and I had to share a bed with my Step-dads mother!
Thank heaven the foloowing week I was back in Utopia.... staying with Nan for four solid weeks! Bliss!

Heeey Momma!

Good topic! Well I am from London hence our childhood holidays were in Clacton on Sea, and Walton on the Naze. I have such happy memories of those days - who needs the Bahamas???

My Mum's family were from Caister on Sea in Norfolk, so we'd also have lots of days out there and Great Yarmouth, visiting family. Sadly there are now none of them left, but I do still go to Norfolk every year and still love it!

Well Gt Yarmouth is our holiday place of choice. The kids love the beach and so does Oggy especially when he gets into a hole digging contest with another Dad. Vauxhall holiday park by the train station is where we generally stay.... bliss!
Mind you I originate from Lancaster and did have some wonderful picnics on the beach at Morecambe with Nan. Wouldnt go near the place now!

We'd be sent to aunts for a week or so, in return our cousins would stay with us. The first place we all went to as a family was the Isle of Man for a weekend when I was 9/10.

I'm gonna start an Oggy thread me thinks......

So is it just me then thta digs whopping great holes when they're on the beach, the deepest was over my head, (though I'm only 5'10) ? Great Yarmouth is a great place nice beach, shops and fun, kool fair too. Have had some brilliant hollidays as a kid went to Scarborough, Skegness, Brixham (Though was in hospital on that holiday when my appendix burst yuck!), Minehead, Clacton, Hastings, the list goes on my mom and dad weren't keen on holidays aborad, my mom hates wales though we did venture to Rhyll a couple of times, and my dad hates scotland, anywhere in between was fine though. Find I'm enjoying the holidays more so now wiht my kids, my family kool, and thats the fun, playing on the beach, yep digging holes and sand sculpting, the best was a huge fish on Torquay beach so kool. And we love Cardiff too, not just because Doctor Who and now Torchwood are filmed there, well maybe it is a big part, nice place and lots of shops too, does that/this count as holiday Momma? And we like going to Nottigham too to shop, I love shopping. Though maybe Cardiff and Nottingham don't count as holidays, but they're quality family time for me and mine.

Not sure mate, don't think he's ever been there as far as I know, I'll ask him next time I see him, though myself I've always wanted to visit and explore the land of Highlander, Taggart, Rob Roy, and Take the High road.

Coming from the Isle of wight, we never really needed to go on holiday,
Plus , the summer holidays thats the time to earn money.
(Every day should be a Holiday) dandy warhols.

Ive lived here all my life and still there are places ive never visited on IOW , even pubs, but im working on it.

When you live 2 mins from the beach, you just never go there, its weird really.
When we did go away it was London or Theme park weekends mostly.

The Isle of Wight was always great to go on holiday, you got to visit Portsmouth well we did, see the Victory Admiral Nelsons flagship, then go on a ferry to the isle. Black Gang Chine was my fave, like smaller disney land but just as kool, and Alum bay with the multicoloured sands, awww those were the days my friends I'd thought they'd never end......Omg I've contracted Mary Hopkinitus.

The first holiday I remember was at Jaywick, must have been about 4. There was Dawlish (Devon) when I was 8, 2 weeks on the Isle of Wight when I was 14 - my parents loved it so much that they moved to Shanklin when my Dad retired. Apart from that, childhood holidays were mostly with friends or relatives - we went to Dover a lot, to stay with my mum's cousin. Not a great beach, as it's all shingle, but I got to know and love Dover Castle. Had a couple of holidays with family friends in Lichfield. If we weren't going away for a holiday, we'd have one Day Out a week, sometimes we'd go to Clacton. There was a place on the beach with trampolines, I think it was called "Kangeroo Kapers" - or maybe that was at Jaywick, just along the coast... I remember the first time I got up the courage to turn a somersault on the trampoline. After I got off the trampoline, I'd always jump a couple of times on the sand, knowing it would feel really weird after jumping on the trampoline.
We'd also have Days Out at the zoo, sightseeing in London, picnics in Epping Forest, visits to museums (luckily I enjoyed that).
There was the milestone summer when my parents decided that at 15 I was old enough to go on holiday without them - I went pony trekking in Cornwall with school friends. We also had a day in London, and a day at Clacton - they seemed very different when visited with friends rather than parents - not that we got up to anything we shouldn't, but the feeling of freedom was wonderful.

I was born in the lake district and havce lived here all my life, so weekends would mean walking round various lakes and up and down mountains, holidays when i was little would be to the beach in my aunties cRARAVAN. mY FIRST HOLIDAY AROAD, I was about 10, impact coach to Estartit in spain, two days travel not good when your travel sick and your seat is next to the coach toilet. But i'm still g;ad of the opportunity.;)

Living in Fife quite lucky as the hills and seaside are all within 1/2hour of home. As a child my parents always managed to save enough for a holiday each year. We did all the seaside resorts Blackpool, St Annes, Rhyll, Morcombe, Southport etc. Looked in on a few lately while travelling, but a sad reflection on their pasts

Where did you go for your hols as a child? We often went camping, the furthest we got was Jersey for 2 years running, it was quite an adventure setting off from Durham in the middle of the night for the long drive down to Weymouth to catch the ferry over which took about 9 hours. I also remember getting rained off 2 camp sites, one in North Yorkshire and one in Northamptonshire. Those late 70s early 80s summers were really good :)We also had twice yearly visits to Blackpool and were also regular visitors to Butlins mainly Filey, but also Barry Island.

Yep regular Butlins Vistors here too, we went every year for quite a few years, we loved it,it seemed like heaven as kids, all that freedom, to be allowed around camp, without your parents, the Beavers and the 913 clubs! Free fairs, swimmimg, crazy golf and table tennis, monirails and the chair lifts! Then in the evenings off to the shows and clubs,
I have a photo of me and my mum, in a like Mother like Daughter competition and one of myself in the Little Miss Venus Competition, will have 2 dig it out.Blimey Herr I could go on all night, many ,many happy memories flooding back!!!
Also went camping with Red Cross youth Group,Oh to be young again!!!

I remember going to Pontins at Camber Sands a couple of times (I remember the paddle boats and the main entrance where I saw my first ever arcade machine "boot hill"), then every year after that was to Ladbrokes at Caister. The highlight for me (not including the drive into Great Yarmouth for the seafront rides) was always the gift shop, radio controlled tanks and the Amusement Arcade under Neptune's Palace!
We'd also get to stay up late, drink lots of cola and even get fish and chips on the way back to the chalet!
Have lots of fond memories of that place, my folks even take their grandkids there now!

Can remember looking forward to the two weeks in a caravan in Skeggy with the Grandparents. The caravans had gas lights in the early days (my kids are convinced I'm Victorian).
I remember having to trawl across the site with my rolled up towel with soap and stuff to have a shower in the shower block. Dropping the soap on the way back and trying to pick the grass off before someone else had to use it.
Going to the loo and having to take the soft stuff with you because there was only Izal provided.
Great times, great times.

The first Holiday I can remember is:-

Butlins at Minehead
Then after that it was four years on the trot to the Isle of Wight, (lots of coloured filled lighthouses to proove it!),
Then when I was 5 we were lucky enough to start going abroard and went to Italy.

When my kids were small we did:-
Hopton in a Chalet, all squashed in with my brother, sister-in-law and their 2 kids.
Then it was Brixham in Devon, had a great time in the Caravan, kids loved it.

after that it was Barry Island..... The weather was so bad, we said we would go abraod after that, so the following year we went to Rhodes, saved every penny we could!! :D

You still can't beat a caravan holiday etc., with kids though!!

Butlins at Minehead back in 1974.
We could go on any of the rides as many times as we wanted without having to pay which was totally cool! All the one-armed bandits cost 1p a go.

Those huge dining halls where everyone would cheer when the staff dropped the crockery.

I remember being p'd off because I wasn't tall enough to go on the cable cars. They had a line marked on a board that showed the minimum permitted height before you were allowed on some of the rides.

Fondest memory of the place was badgering my mum for money to play "This Town Aint Big Enough" by Sparks on every jukebox I came across. I still have the vinyl single my mum bought me back then.:D

Used to go to Blackpool alot cause we hace family there. When I was young my aunty ran a boarding house there and we'd get to stay for free.

Other locations of family holidays included Mablethorpe, Caster on Sea and Lowestoft. Many memories of sandy socks and sunburn.

The first holiday I can recall was Whitby in Summer 1979. I stayed in a rented terrace house for a week and the only thing I can remember was watching Sapphire and Steel and being scared stiff - there was also a power cut that night, and posing for a photo with my two cousins - which I still have.

We didn't go away every year but I do remember Skeggy,Chapel St Leonards (Maid Marian Caravan Park),Great Yarmouth (Silver Sands I think) Tenby...all made better by all the comics bringing out Summer specials to read.
My job at the Caravan Parks was to take the plastic container to the standpipe and fill it with water for use in the Caravan!
I remember at school, some well heeled kid had been to Spain. They had to stand in front of everyone at Assembly and tell everyone all about these exotic lands and their adventures!!

growing up in 1970's Doncaster, no-one had any money..certainly no-one went abroad on hols!

Like most of South Yorkshire & East Midlands folk, we caravanned at Skeggy, Mablethorpe, Chapel St Leonards.... also Filey, Scarborough.

Butlins Skeggy 1971-3, Pwllheli 1974. Primrose Valley too.

My first overseas hols was 3rd year comp trip...our year went to Yugoslavia/Italy in April 1980

My first holiday was Pontins at Bracklesham Bay in 1978. It would have been Butlins in Minehead the year before had i not contracted chicken pox a few days prior.

Oggie, i know what you mean about the kid going to Spain. We had a geography teacher who every year ran a school trip to Switzerland for those kids whose parents were not counting the pennies. The thing is that for the 6 weeks or so before they left on their trip of a lifetime, our geography lessons were just an itinery of their holiday badly disguised as a lesson. It was a nightmare for those of us who knew that holiday time was a beach hut with flaky paint. :(

Oh yes, those summer specials were great :)

We never went abroad, always stayed in seaside resorts like Weymouth or Blackpool. We used to take those packs of little cereal boxes of frosties and ricecrispies. My brother and me would fight over who would have which cereal. My holiday present would be one of those little windmills and a bucket and spade, then we'd go looking for beasties in rockpools. We always sat behind one of those striped canvas windbreaks on the beach where mum would sit doing her knitting!!

Warners at Dovercourt [where hi di hi was filmed] so I was a Warners wagtail. I took my kids back for the closing weekend.
Butlins Clacton as Day visitors.
Camber Sands.[/B]
New Beach. So Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway features heavily.
Weeley...mum and Dad got a caravan there in 1974 with gas lamps they kept the pitch until about 1989. Thorpe, Jaywick and St Osyths markets, Colchester searchlight tattoo, The outspan club on Clacton beach and Uncle Tony's Punch and Judy show at Walton.

The Carnivals were highlights too.

We never actually went away on holiday, my Dad never wanted to go away. Instead when he was on holiday from work we used to go out somewhere different each day, places like Buxton, Matlock and Holme Firth (Last of the summer Wine country) and then take picnics. Often I used to go and stay with my Aunt and Uncle who lived near Macclesfield in the country for school holidays.

Hello everyone.

Pontins and Butlin have been mentioned a lot on this thread. We holidayed at both when I was a boy, but it was the Butlins in Bognor Regis I recall the most vividly. We were there in 1974 and 1975, I think. I recall 'Radio Butlin' waking us up in the morning with music: 'Sleepy Shores' one year and Fleetwood Mac's 'Albatross' the next. I remember the fairground rides and not quite believing that we could go on them all day and not have to pay! There was the immense Scalextric track, the TV rooms where we could still catch 'Some Mothers Do 'Av 'Em', and the endless hours my brother and I spent in the swimming pool. Truly happy memories.

I used to go away for a week with my Mum and Grandparents (my poor Dad had to stay home and look after the dog). I remember going to Blackpool, Rhyl two years running, Skegness and Great Yarmouth and Weston Super Mare. My Grandad took me to Edinburgh when I was 10 and we stayed with his brothers family. My first sojourn abroad was with my parents in Oct 79 when I was 12. We went to Salou in Spain for a week. It was awful. It rained, everything was shut and we went with a family my parents had met the year before in Palma. The two children were 3 or 4 years older than me (a big difference at that age) and we had nothing in common whatsoever. They were into horses, I was into football. My last holidays with my parents were in 1981 and 1983. We stayed with my mums cousin Sue in Somerset. I got on well with her two kids Sarah and especially Geoff. we spent hours playing games on my spectrum and at the time he was learning to play drums. He's not done too bad, he's now the main man in the group Portishead. Not seen him since though. Can't even get free tickets when they tour.

We went to a pubs coming out party recently and all of the staff performed this...my daughter was gobsmacked that I knew it now I know why!!

Went to an engagement do last night & this song came on. Must confess I don't know it. I've never heard it played ANYWHERE before. AND it cleared the dance floor sharpish!! ;)

Our cousins' - and they came to stay with us. I used to stay with a particularly hurling-mad family, I was useless at all sports, eventually I used to hide from them !
One particular cousin came from Dublin every year, wasn't the sporty type, my older brothers used to terrorise him ! Nice guy & we get on great now as adults do.

Head, turned it into a permanent holiday home park,or build houses on it.Then it was Hoburn Holiday Park, went to Rockley Sands a couple of times too.Was a lot older before we ventured off to France!

My family hols were taken at Brixham most years in the same guest house which was very old style and lovely. Then for some strange reason we started going abroad,Italy,Malta etc...But my fondest memories were of mrs Guilders guest house in Brixham.Went to Amsterdam once a year for my bday.(cant remember much about these trips):D Went to Zakynthos last year which was great! Quad biking around the mountains is fun and the locals are very friendly, especially if you try to talk to them in their own language. My partner and I got offered jobs at a restaurant on the island but my daughter is a bit too young to be uprooted at the moment.5 years time I should be there living, had enough of this place.

We mostly went to Skeggy/Ingoldmels and had some nightmare holidays there, including one when I broke my leg playing football with my dad when I was only 4 years old. Also went to Llandudno in North Wales.

In my teens we started going to Sorrento in Italy - really nice there but I don't think I could go back there now as I can no longer tolerate hot weather. We also went to Wissant in France a few times with the school - real rave up (and booze up) it was!

Between 1982 & 2000 I went most summers to Wells Next The Sea in North Norfolk, my gran had a caravan there which we could use for a week each year.

In the UK we also went to Isle Of Wight (twice), Minehead Butlins, Bracklesham Bay - near Chichester, Filey Haven Caravan Site & Mawgan near Helston.

We could afford to go abroad every other year & went to Portugal, Menorca, Corfu, France (twice, to the car on the ferry), Crete, Rhodes, Majorca & the USA (3 times.)

The cards brought back many happy memories for me too.

I remember the road train going round, the fountains by the swimming pool, the figures on the walls, learning to swim in the indoor pool, the glass walls in in the indoor pool where you could sit in the cafe watching people swim above you , the funfair particularly the helter skelter.

I think I'll be adding to my collection of postcards now I've started it :)

I went to independently run holiday camp, called Sussex Beach, not sure if it was the Pontin's that had been taken over. I remember the owner looked like what happen if Hattie Jaques & Molly Sugden got into a teleporter at the same time!

Highfields in Clacton. Pontin's in Brixham (St. Mary's I think), then 2 years at Pontin's Camber Sands, and after that we got all exotic. Went to Lido Di Jesolo outside Venice one year, then Monastir in Tunisia in 1987. That was pretty much the last family holiday I went on. Still have weirdly fond memories of Camber Sands, though the earlier poster describing the camp as a bit of a gulag was correct. Great amusement arcade, though. Spent pretty much 2 weeks playing Gorf.

Mr Racket (snr) decreed holidays were to be a once a year, fortnight long tour of canals of the midlands on a narrowboat.

At the time, I thought this was a fate worse than death. The weather was always dismal, stopping for a boozy (for my parents at least) pub lunch, then more locks, rain, slippery towpaths, wonky chemical toilets, running aground etc etc.

However, looking back now, it wasn't all that bad, saw some lovely countryside and mooring up in the middle of nowhere is something I'd probably consider now.

Plus, without them holidays, I could never say I'd visited places as exotic and varied as Kidsgrove, Macclesfield, Bromsgrove, Burton-on-Trent or Market Drayton.

However, responding to the where did you go for your holidays question at primary school always felt a little underwhelming. On my holidays I went to Tamworth!

Before I was born my parents went of a couple of canal holidays, one year they did the Grand Union Canal, & on the other the Cheshire Ring.

There were a few hi-jinx on both holidays, involing a near coming together with another boat, & spilt chemical loo & a TV aerial trapped under a low tunnel.

I count my blessings that my family didn't make me holiday at Butlins, Pontin's etc. To me they are like prisoner-of-war camps that are very inflexible as to what times you can eat, what time you have to get back in the grounds for before the Goons close the big metal gates and guards start patrolling the inner compound. A bit like wearing an electronic tag and being under curfue.

Are they really like that or is it just my twisted imagination?

I went to Minehead in 1985 & was surprised that almost everything there was free, especially the fun fair (though the queues we often long). Some of the live entertainment wasn't far removed from Hi-De-Hi.

We did a few Pontins camps when I was a kid but mainly we stayed at Warners (when they catered for children)
I stayed at, amongst others, Sinah Warren, Coronation and Dovercourt Bay.
It was at Dovercourt Bay where they filmed Hi-De-Hi and Im always boring my family by pointing out the obvious during H-D-H reruns!

I think Sinah Warren is the only one remaining from my youth

We used to go to Torbay Chalet Hotel in Paignton, later taken over by Pontins. Now demolished for houses. We went there every year from the late 70's to mid 80's. It was fantastic, still mates with people we met there on Facebook. We also had a caravan in Llanbedrog and used to go to the Warren in Abersoch. back then it catered for families with shops and restaurants and a little cafe on the beach but now it has gone all exclusive with a gym and members only club. Beach is still amazing though. Sending mum and dad there this year for their 45th anniversary.

In 1974 my Dad bought an old boat and was moored in Ipswich, industrial dockyard really. But every year we had it lifted to scrape off the barnacles from the hull. When you are 9 years old you just accepted this as the norm! I thought that every kid went away for a week for solid work !!!

Good fun though when I look back!

Then Dad bought an old Transit van, and it was camping for quite a few years to Weymouth and Norfolk. And something someone said in an earlier Holiday memory was the mini cereal variety boxes! Lovely

I can relate to this. I've posted already about my holidays in the rentable bungalows at Bracklesham Bay. We had a dachshund and would also take walks along the beach with her. I think we played board games if the weather was bad, but - as is often the case with this kind of memory - I recall the sun always shined!

Most years we went down to the New Forest and stayed (first in a tent and then we bought a caravan) at a campsite near Milford-On-Sea called Lytton Lawn. We used to go round Lymington, Christchurch, Bournemouth, Southampton and into the main forest. I don't go back there as often as I'd like but the last time was in 2004.

I remember that we used to go and have occasional meals at the restaurant at the Pontins Wick Ferry Holiday Camp in Christchurch. The dining hall was like walking into a school hall. By 2004, the camp had been bulldozed and was in the process of being replaced by housing.

In the evenings we used to have a dinghy with a small outboard motor which we would launch at Keyhaven and motor out towards Hurst Castle, and we would sometimes go to The White Horse in Milford, and sit out in the beer garden, or in my case, play on the climbing frame. Great times.

Snap!! Well not technically a small holding, but we did have horses, sheep, countless chickens/guinea pigs/rabbits, plus at least 2 dogs. So we probably got a handful of holidays when I was young. I remember at the time being really jealous of my pet-less friends who got to go to Spain and other "exotic" places every year.....but looking back I wouldn't have had it any other way! We didn't have many holidays when i was young, firstly because of the cost and also because we had a business. A shop for a few years and then a pub. My sister went on holiday with my Uncle and Auntie (she was their favourite), my brother went fishing and camping with my Dad and I went to Blackpool with my mum! I've never been keen on Blackpool.

We did have one or two good hols though, once we went to Rhyll and stayed in a caravan.

But one of the best holidays I had was in 1981 when we took our kids to Holland camping. Glorious weather, lovely campsite lots to do, beautiful beaches and we had a bunch of terrific friends with us too. It was the summer of Charles and Dianas wedding and on the day we had a 'street party' between the tents and all dressed in red white and blue! The wedding was shown on TV in the campsite bar and when the National Amthem played all the Brits stood up to a man!

Holidays as a child was usually Butlins Pwhelli, North Wales, or to our Caravan in Prestatyn North Wales. Now my holidays are taken in much more exotic places. But I am in the financial position to be able to go to places like ,Thailand, St Lucia, Cuba, Kenya, Hong Kong, also USA and Australia. Also the odd weeks in Majorca, Canaries or Greece, when I have a few spare weeks from work in between. I have been very fortunate in life. But would not knock anyone if they had a holiday in this country. There are some beautiful places in our Green and Pleasant land.

We always used to go up to the North of Scotland. Mainly Aviemore (Santa Claus Land - who remembers that?) and Boat of Garten. Then we went to Loch Ness, Oban, Fort William on other holidays. Remember we'd rent out a cottage when I was really young, then we stayed in a B&B one year as we were only away the weekend. After that we only booked through Hoeseasons, staying on caravan sites or chalets.

At the time I wasn't too impressed always staying in Scotland for our holidays, I always badgered Mum & Dad to take us somewhere exciting like Butlins or Blackpool, but we never got. I'm glad, as those holidays made my childhood and we loved them.

We never really went on holiday in my family, only visiting relatives in Sussex and Yorkshire. We were rarely together as a family, we had a dog and somebody had to stay behind to look after it (usually my Dad). There are four of us which must have been expensive for my parents, and once the eldest started leaving home it was difficult to get everybody together for anything, let alone a holiday.

My Mum still buys those little Kelloggs boxes when I visit her to this day, but they don't put Ricicles in them anymore, prompting me to actually check whether Ricicles are still sold in supermarkets the other day (they are).

We never went on holiday when I was young :(. My dad had to look after my nanna who was more or less house bound, but he wasn't into holidays anyway so used it as an excuse not to go anywhere.

The first holiday I ever went on was a week long trip to the lake district with the school when I was 10, then I never went away again until I had a weekend in London when I was 14. I had a few more weekends away after that but true holidays didn't start for me until I was 17 and saved up to go to Majorca. I've never looked back!

I've just returned from my first British seaside holiday for nearly 30 years and I'm delighted to say I enjoyed it :). Things haven't changed much the weather was still iffy. :) The little shops on the promenade still sell bucket and spades, fishing nets, polystyrene gliders, saucy and normal postcards.

The arcades still had the same type of machines as well as the newer ones such as 2p bandits, the horse racing and speedway games where you have to select the winner, the coin game where you drop money in and try and push the coins hanging over the edge off, the machines where you try and grab a prize etc.

Then there was all the seafood stalls, grannies sat huddled behind a wind breaker on the beach and kids making sand castles and drawing in the sand.

Morecambe was where we used to go. That was when Morecambe had all the attractions. From what I've seen on the net now, Morecambe is a ghost town.

I can remember as a kid in the 70s/80s, there been to fairs, further out there was (still is) a park called Happy Mount park. This had trampolines, paddling pool, and a train ride around a area in the park, tennis courts. When the weather was good, we used to spend most of the day in there. Later on in the 80s, a outdoor swimming pool was built on the seafront at Morecambe, I can remember this having a wave machine.

I never went to Blackpool until I was around 13, and I was very disappointing with it, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about and I still dislike the place now.

As a child, from manchester to southampton (where I was born and now live). After that, lived in New Zealand and toured the North Island extensively with my family, my dad was a manager of a caravan company which meant every summer we just hitched up a caravan for two weeks and just travelled.

I've also been to America disneyland etc in the 70's, Singapore, fiji..............all good times.

My first holiday was in 1984 when the whole family went to Sri Lanka. We met my Mum's relatives and stayed with them. As a small boy it was eye opening to meet my Mums own Mum and Dad. Sadly, they actually had become senile since the last time Mum saw them in 1975 when she went over with my Sister when she was little. It wasn't an enjoyable trip, I got ill with Mosquito bites and we had to come home earlier than planned. We'd had all the jabs and tablets but I guess my parents didn't think about the Mossies...or some Deet would have done. We went back in 1992 as well and we stayed the whole duration-I hated it for a number of reasons but mainly for contracting Cellulitus from infected....you guessed it:MOSQUITO BITES. My Mum got the illness when we came back to the UK and actually needed to be in Hospital for a week or two...all we bloody needed was Pennicillin tablets!!! When we went there both times we stayed with Mum or Dads relatives, we basically lived as the natives so didn't really do the tourist thing of staying in nice hotels and seeing all the best parts of the country. I having been back since but if I go I'd like to go as a tourist and live it up for a change....
My Dads been to America, Canada, Greece-he went there to see if it was worth emigrating with the family. I used to think he should have taken us with him at the time but I guess its a) a welcome break for the man and b) easier to see the realities of a foreign country much easily when alone. Toward the end of their lives Mum and Dad used Travelsphere Coach Holidays and saw Italy, Switzerland, France. They loved the holidays there and raved about the peoples in those countries being so nice to them which I found odd as usually Europeans can be racist to non Whites. When I see Coach Trip it reminds me a bit of their hols...As an adult I've been to Southern France, Northern France and Northern Italy.

robin hood camp between rhyl and prestatyn. My dad used to love coming back to the caravan at the end of the evening and lighting the gas lamps. Ahh those were the days.

The bulk of my childhood holidays were usually spent in static caravans as my parents weren't that wealthy. We stayed at the Holimarine site in Goodrington(between Torquay and Paington) for a few years in a row and it was the mid-late 80's when the summers always seemed long and hot. Our holiday treat used to be battered chips and fish from a place in Goodrington sands called 'The Frying Scotsman'. My dad would usually spend an hour or so fishing in Brixham while my mum and me would look around the shops or just look at the boats in the harbour. We once had a week in a static caravan in Aberystwyth. It rained solidly for 5 days out of 7 and all I had for entertainment was a Tonka Jeep! Later on, my parents bought an old Sprite touring caravan which had a footpump for the water, gas lights and no running hot water. We had a week in Bournemouth in it which was great fun. After a succession of caravan holidays my parents wanted a change and we had a week at Butlins in Minehead. 3 days into the holiday I woke up from a terrible nightmare that made me scream my head off into the small hours. We packed up and went home the next day. So it was back to the caravan the next year. In the early 90s my dad got promoted at work and we started to take foreign holidays from then on. My folks still love caravanning and they have a permanent pitch on a site in South Wales but I don't have time anymore for weeks away as I work very hard running my own business.

Sheerness on the isle of sheppey, later minster on sheppey as mum had relatives there.Wales once with grandparants.Swanage once with the lions club in a caravan. Many other holidays were spent local perhaps with the odd day out at longleat or Rode bird gardens or a picknic at the park etc. Many more in my teens I usually stayed with dad whilst mum went to see relatives.I don't really think we ever had the money to go far at all in those days.

I love the places people have mentioned in this thread and other thread's in the "Holiday's Section", I so so like the places that are not as known as the major holiday places. Torquay was another place we went to twice, as was Eastboune which i'd forgotten about. Happy happy times indeed.

It was always Blackpool when I was wee, went to Berwick-upon-tweed and Scarborough once each.

When I was 11 we went to Dublin for a long weekend then in 1998 we went abroad for the first time. Well my first time as my parents had been before.

Since then only 2003 has been the only year I've not been abroad at least once.

Crimdon dene caravan park, just outside Hartlepool (known in the North East as Costa del Crimdon) and a caravan park at Berwick. Down at heel, on the face of it **** but some surprisingly happy memories.

Several places on the east coast, but particularly Bamburgh and a wonderful guest house called Greenhill Farm with it's secluded sandy beaches and dunes. Bliss.

I remember we went to Hastings, there was a caravan site there, it was really nice.:)

The only thing I didn't like was for a few days it rained, so when going to the toilet and shower blocks, the mud was so slippery there, and of course I slipped once when I was coming back from the shower, so back again I had to go.

Was always excited waiting for summer holidays at a kid on the east coast. Went to Lowestoft - Loved eating fish and chips overlooking the sea, Mablethorpe (both had great beaches) Hunstanton and Skegness. Always seemed to buy some soveniers from the shops, loved the horse carousel (secretly want to go on one again). Anyone know of any nice beaches on the east coast?
