Although you still get recordings of stand-up routines and TV/radio shows there don't seem to be the amount of 'comedy' records there used to be. The classics I guess were the Monty Python ones in the 70s or the Derek and Clive albums (the sick bag cover one had definite notoriety in my school). So are there any that you still have a fondness for, and more importantly still actually play every now and again even though you know all the jokes?

I'll start it off - Neil's Heavy Concept Album in which everyone's favourite 80s hippy - Neil (off The Young Ones), AKA Nigel Planer, sings the album's only hit - Hole in My Shoe, promptly gets sucked down a plug hole, eats a hamburger and turns into Neil the Barbarian and, basically, goes through a series of bizarre adventures interspersed with a varitey of 60s psych covers and original songs. I still find it funny and the musical side of things is great (coming from Dave (not the Eurythmics one) Stewart who also had a one-hit wonder in the 80s with It's My Party).

Hancock for me..I used to love Python but now find them a bit silly.Derek & Clive has not aged well to me.

Used to listen to Billy Connelly, Not the nine o'clock news, Monty Python, but my favourite was The Goon Show - found about 120 or so episodes in mp3 format on net.:D

There used to be a great site for Kenny Everett's Captain Kremmen that had Mp3 archives of episodes from his Captial Radio show but (as it probably infringed all manner of copyright malarky) it seems to have gone now and I didn't copy them off :(

The link to this thread being that there was an LP of the Captain Kremmen movie (animated by Cosgrove Hall).

And I listened to the first Not The Nine O'Clock News LP just the other day. Still raises a chuckle.

To Rowan Atkinson in a chimp outfit - 'when he caught you were you wild?'

'wild, I was absolutely livid!'

Very appropriate for this time of year -

'What Are We Gonna Get 'Er Indoors?' by George Cole & Dennis Waterman

Combining Christmas and 'Minder' in about 3-and-a-half minutes.

The Sideboard song by Chas n Dave is apt too.

When I was about 10 years old I was given an old steptoe album, the episode was about a load of false teeth, dont know what happened to it, maybe an ex girlfriend has it :( I listened to it frequently, (probably only had a few records)

yeah we had the Jasper Carrot ones too. Also a Barron Knights album with their funny songs on which we used to listen to on the stereo system (which had replaced the radiogramme).

"The bloke was all over the road, I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him"

Exactly..
"I pulled into a lay-by with smoke coming from under the hood. I realised the car was on fire so took my dog and smothered it with a blanket."

Carrott was always good, I had a good few of his albums at one time. I also had a couple of Rowan Atkinson's, I forget the titles now, but one contained that brilliant sketch where he's the Indian waiter trying desperately to keep his patience with a table full of drunks: "Cucumber Raitha, Onion Raitha, Paperback Raitha, yes, ha ha very funny."

But my favourite by far is Viv Stanshall's Sir Henry at Rawlinson End. It takes you on a flight of fancy you never expected. And leaves you there as it roars away in a taxi flicking V signs.

Billy Connolly's songs very funny, especially the Welly Song -

"If it wisnae for yer wellies, where wid ye be?
You'd be in the hospital or in-firmary!
You wid have a dose o' the flu or even pluracy,
If ye didnae hae yer feet in yer wellies!"

My favourite comedy songs are probably those from Monty Python, such as The Bruces' Philosphers Song, The Lumberjack Song and I Like Chinese (although nowadays that song would probably seem racist!).

And who can forget Spitting Image and The Chicken Song? :D

I love the Not the nine o'clock news album. Fave bits are Gerald the Gorilla, Bouncing song, Abu Ben Adhem and the Rowan Atkinson character that stands up and rants "Bring back ITV". Still listen to Derek and Clive live from time to time and Magic roundabout by Jasper Carrott (b side to Funky Moped) still gets a laugh.

I hate myself for knowing this, but I saw them once when I was a young'un. I think it was a Butlin's holiday or something. The act was a cheesy 70s band the likes of Smokey or Racey or Pilot. They'd play pompous pop/rock of the day very seriously until their drummer (Russ Abbot) started playing the buffoon and "ruining" the show. Funny for five minutes, but the act went on for at least half an hour. Even when I was 7 I knew a one trick pony when I saw it. (Take a bow, Rod Hull)

I had both the Captain Kremmen album and the Not The Nine O'Clock News album. Brilliant both of them, but that Kremmen album had some seriously racy stuff in it that me as a child of 9 probably shouldn't have been listening to...

"Captain! I've been graped!"
"Don't you mean raped?"
"No, there was a whole bunch of 'em..."

Good lord, how he ever got away with that stuff...

Around 1986 Billy Connolly released his "A Wreck On Tour" (Getit?) album when he really was at the top of his game...my friends and myself were rolling on the carpet within 5 minutes of placing it on my turntable....I defy anybody to find a funnier piece of vinyl!

My parents took me to see Mike Harding at Southport Theatre,He was really funny,We got an album which I think was called "Take your fingers off it!"
That was also very good.

I had the Not the nine o'clock news Hedgehog sandwich album
and I think you can also include any of the Muppets album which I used to love particulary the chickens singing baby face which still cracks me up

What comedy/ novelty records by actors/ actresses can people remember?

I have one by Joan Sims from 1963 called Spring Song and it has a B- Side, Men.

She did 2 others but I can only find details for one of the singles Hurry Up Gran/ Oh Not Again Ken. They were produced by George Martin.

From what I remember it might have had the words Girl and Golden Hair in the title, but I could be way off.

Anyone able to help?

What others can people think of?
