CLASSIC
While we are on the subject, when I was a child my dad and earlier my Grandad use to sing a song called 'Poor Little Joe' and it use to make me sob. I have looked everywhere for it but cant find it, well not to the words dad and grandad use to sing and i wondered if anyone knew of it. I will try to remember the words????
Poor little Joe,
out in the snow,
nowhere to shelter
and nowhere to go.
A carriage went by,
with a lady inside,
she looked upon Joe,
with a down casted eye.
She threw him a penny,
to buy him some bread.
But poor little Joe,
Laydown there dead.
There could have been more but I cant remember. After singing that to myself now wonder if they were just evil:D:D RIP grandad you bad'un!

Like Ross, Barber's Adagio gets my eyes moist very quickly. Also REM's Everybody Hurts, and The Communards' For a Friend.
'Happy' is more difficult. My favourite songs are those that move me so it's difficult to think of one that makes me instantly joyful.
I'll have to come back to this one...
:)
Oh Lori - Alessi. Reminds me of summer
So you win again - Hot Chocolate. The memory of my friend 'singing' this when she had headphones on still makes me laugh.

Lady Linda ( Beach Boys, summer '79 ). was 13, got the feeling that I was as happy as I'd ever be at that particular time & from then on, things would go downhill. While things have gone well personally, the world around me did seem to go downhill - as if someone up there flicked a switch for the worse - from summer 1980 onwards.

Aerosmith's 'I don't want to miss a thing' makes me want to cry! I don't know why though, I really love the song, maybe I want to sob at the beauty of it lol
Any up beat song makes me happy, ones I can dance too and sing my heart out too, my dancing is kinda scary though and I'm pretty sure my singing scares the cat but I don't care, I'm having fun LOL I like 'low' by Flo Rida, Paramore's 'Misery Business' and 'Crush', things like that :D
There are also songs that just make me tingle all over like Evanessence's 'Bring me to life!' :D

Okinawa Song by Ryuchi Sakamoto (from the CD Neo Geo) - This one just tears my guts out, especially when one recalls that in WWII that little island was the site of horror in which over a quarter of the civilian population perished as the USA and Japan slugged it out.

The one song that makes me smile is Lovely day by Bill Withers, always makes me think of those long hot summers of the mid 70's.
heaven is a place on earth makes me both happy and cry.
power of love jennifrer rush makes me happy.
heaven is a place on earth makes me both happy and cry.
power of love jennifrer rush makes me happy.
I think i've too many for each Darren. I love loads of song's from the 80s ... in particular the 2 you've mentioned. The Living Years by Mike & The Mechanics makes me happy and sad. I love the Mel and Kim hit Respectable but it is so sad that Mel is'nt here today. I also like Karma Chemoleon by Culture Club and a few by Lisa Stansfield like This Is The Right Time and All Around The World too. From the 90s Angels by Robbie Williams stands out as does any song by James ... in-particular Sit Down and loads of Oasis early stuff like Wonderwall and Don't Look Back Back In Anger make me happy too.
I agree - Mariah Careys song is the best Christmas song by a mile and I also get a lump in the throat when I hear it...maybe its cause its xmas and the time of year.
Also - REM Everybody Hurts - that makes me real sad but is a really beautiful song.
Makes me happy
Queen - Dont stop me now
Robbie Williams - Millenium
Chris Farlowe - Out of Time
Yazoo - Only you
Bob Marley - 3 Little Birds - who cant smile when this is playing...

Without a doubt the song that always brings a smile (and sometimes even a tear to my eye at the same time) would be Positive Thinking by Eric & Ernie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKN7aWTUrIU
When you feel down try positive thinking
That's what I told them and said
Don't wear a frown try positive thinking
Laugh at your troubles instead
You've gotta look on the bright side
On hope so much depends
With your confidence sinking
Positive thinking helps you on the way, my friend
When things look black try positive thinking
Treat every season as Spring
No glancing back try positive thinking
Trust what tomorrow may bring
This crazy world what we live in
Will keep on spinning round
And then with good, strong positive thinking
We'll get together and life won't let us down

I completely agree with this. A wonderful song! I think it's by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, and that the latter recorded her own version. I have it on a CD somewhere.

Best years of our lives by Modern Romance makes me happy. It reminds me of when one of my best friends first moved around the corner from me and joined my primary school in 1982. We were only 6 at the time but she's still my best friend now! Her parents had this single and played it often so it takes me right back to those days. The title is quite apt too.

"Wind Beneath My Wings" always makes me cry; it was played at both my mum's and dad's funeral, but even before that, it "got me right there." I also can't help shedding a tear at Brian & Michael's "Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs," the bit where Lowry dies.
I always feel happy when I hear "Make Me Smile," by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and also Petula Clark's "Downtown." As a youngster growing up in a small Lancashire town, it always made me think how exciting it must be to be a grown up!
I think the saddest song ever is Puff The Magic Dragon. It's way too sad for kids!
Oh yes, definitely! Although I think I was an older child before I understood, and realised just how sad it was when "Jackie Piper came no more."

Here's one of tearjerkers for me. My dad had this record when I was a kid so I heard this song all the time.
Bobby Goldsboro -- Honey (1968)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc7xemUwymw
See the tree how bit it's grown
But friend, it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it was just a twig
Then the first snow came and she ran out
To brush the snow away so it wouldn't die
Came running in all excited, slipped and almost hurt herself
And I laughed till I cried
She was always young at heart
Kind of dumb and kind of smart
And I loved her so
And I surprised her with a puppy
Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago
And it would sure embarass her
When I came in from working late cause I would know
That she'd been sitting there and crying
Over some sad and silly late late show
And Honey, I miss you
And I'm being good
And I'd love to be with you
If only I could
She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad
But what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me
And hugged my neck
I came home unexpectedly
And caught her crying needlessly
In the middle of the day
And it was in the early spring
When flowers bloomed and robins sing
She went away
One day while I was not at home
When she was there and all alone the angels came
Now all I have is memories of Honey
And I wake up nights and call her name
Now my life's an empty stage where Honey lived and Honey played
And love grew up
And a small cloud passes overhead
And cries down on the flower bed that Honey loved
And see the tree how big it's grown
But friend, it hasn't been to long it wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it was just a twig

Eduard Khil -- I Am Glad, Cause I'm Finally Returning Back Home (aka Trololo Song) (1976)
Up until a few years ago Eduard Khil was an obscure (to the rest of the world) Russian singer until this song went viral on the internet. Originally the song had lyrics which, strangely enough for a Russian song, was about a cowboy riding home to his sweetheart. The substitution of the original lyrics with "Trololo" led to stories about the lyrics being banned by Soviet authorities. It was in fact the result of a disagreement between the composer and lyricist. Nevertheless this song always makes me smile when I hear it.

Middle of the road Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep made me cry when I was young as my Mum spent a bit of time in hospital with my baby sister and the lines "where's your mama gone" always started the tears as I couldn't understand why she wasn't coming home.
Summer holiday by Cliff Richard(although don't consider me a fan of his) always makes me smile as My Dad always used to sing it to us on the morning of the start of our holidays.

Not so much happy or crying but there are a range of songs from the early 70's which make me feel safe, from 6-30am when my dad would leave for work and leave the radio on through the redifusion TV, Chirpy Chirpy cheep cheep (as mentioned above),George Harrisons "My sweet lord", The New Seekers "I'd like to teach the world to sing"...a few new seekers tracks actually.
Dead lucky me, my childhood memories are all of safety really.
I can not believe that i'd forgot to mention Nillson's "Without You" - I so so much love this song but it is so so sad at the time, as if it represents a funeral etc, but it is a great song just like John Denver and "Annie's Song", but that holds singnificance as it was played at my Uncle's Funeral, so i'll always like it now through that, though of course I always liked it anyway and could never understand why John was such an un-recognised talent.
I love the last one just mentioned too - by Terry Jack's "Season's In The Sun", though a lot of people I know think it is a horrible song, but I think it has poigant lyrics no question. If Terry's version is as good as Westlife's though - I think i'll have to let the Jury obstain on that one and if pushed i'd say Westlife's would win - just!! As well another total classic from the 1980s I love ius Mike and The Mechanics and The Living Years, which holds a mixture of emotion's, that is sung to perfection by Mike and the rest of them. It could just easily possibly I feel qualify in the top 5 if not 3 or 4 greatest song's of the 80s!
oe i have just remembered nd it makes me both hapy and sad is the glory of love by peter cetera.
it really is a superb song and i have loved it since i first heard in the karate kid part 2.
I had nearly forgot too, it just came back to memory, how much I used to really really like Peters and Lee, after they became un-known for a bit I recall they had a brief resurgence in popularity in the 1990s. In my area we had a chain store in those day's called Ethel Austin which was a bit of an up-market version of Poundland and Poundstretcher and their Music was very very popular with the other music tapes Ethel Austin sold from the era.
I used to love a lot of their cover versions, they were sang excellently - which cover versions are not often I feel. I recall I think (believe though i'm not 100% sure they did a great cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello", if not it was a very similar group, but regardless i've alway's loved the song), as I did with the great Late Luther Vandross' version too. I will have to try and recall if i've got Peters and Lee on CD. I think that Peters and Lee were a truly legendary great duet of singers indeed.
another song i just love rgt makes me happy is take on me by aha.
its really is for me one of the most icnooc songs of the eighties.
This is just brilliant. I reckon it was the best he ever did.
http://youtu.be/61NUDDXT9nU
I had allmost forgot another one i'd heard eralier - "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) by the Eurtymics. Annie Lennox and Dave Stweart really made that song great and it's one i'll always like and that'll be a "Hpapy song" as it were for me. Shame, I wish Dave Stewart had more recognition for his efforts and got the plaudits as Annie does and has.
this makes me happy.
but near all her classics do.
