View Full Version : What's your all time favorite rock lyrics???
i was thinking a thread where you post the lyrics of your favourite song'd be kinda cool, so...heres' mine...
DEAD FLOWERS
The Rolling Stones
"Well, when you're sitting there
In your silk upholstered chair
Talking to some rich folks that you know
Well I hope you won't see me
In my ragged company
You know I could never be alone
Take me down little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the Queen of the Underground
And you can send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flower by the mail
Send me dead flowers to my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
Well, you're sitting back
In your pink Cadillac
Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day
I'll be in my basement room
With a needle and a spoon
And another girl can take my pain away
Take me down little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the Queen of the Underground
And you can send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flower by the mail
Send me dead flowers to my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
Take me down little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the Queen of the Underground
And you can send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flower by the US mail
Say it with dead flowers at my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
No I won't forget to put roses on your grave"

This was an interesting question. My favorite bands are KISS, AC/DC, Tesla, Cinderella and Aerosmith. However, when thinking of my favorite song lyrics, I would have to go with Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man. I currently live in Dallas, Texas with my wife and kids. It is a busy city where everyone tends to be in a hurry. This rushed life style seems to make everyone cranky and inconsiderate. I am originally from East Texas and grew up in the country. I can’t wait until I am financial secure enough to go back. This song seems to sum up how I feel when it says "Forget your lust for the rich man's gold" and "be a simple kind of man".
Simple Man
(Gary Rossington - Ronnie Van Zant)
Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.
[Chorus:]
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won't you do this for me son,
If you can?
Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.
[Chorus]
Boy, don't you worry... you'll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.
[Chorus]

Too Wild to Tame (by Dirty Dan Buck & The Boyzz):
baby don't you leave me
honey don't you ask me why
just give me a few more seconds
before i slip between your thighs
cos I'm too wild, too wild to tame...
The Police - Synchronicity 2 ...
Secrateries pout and preen like cheap tarts in a red light street,
And all he ever thinks to do is watch...
The whole song is a lyrical master piece
Oh yeh, Synchronicity 2
...'and every single meeting with his so-called superiors is a humiliating kick in the crotch ..'
...and then something about 'many miles away something crawls to the surface of a dark Scotish Loch' . Weird lyrics. I think it's to do with Chaos theory .. equal and opposite reactions and all that stuff

Listen to I Caught Fire (Album Version) by The Used : http://www.napster.com/player/tracks/13762148
best lyrics ever! these guys can write song killer tunes.
From one of my favorite songs:
"The sunshine bores the daylights outta me"
Rocks Off - The Rolling Stones
The chorus of Smells Like Teen Spirit, real energy.
I always loved the line from Adam & the Ants track Dog Eat Dog
"makes me proud, so proud of you, i see innocence shinning through"
the man wrote superb songs with Marco Pirroni.
Stand & Deliver the 1st record i ever bought
Not really a rock song but i always liked thr line from Prefab sprouts moving the river - see you've got a new girlfriend, hows the wife taking it. also elvis costello two little hitlers - i thought ide let you down, but you were just deflated. I really think a lot of his lyrics are clever.
I always thought that line from Dog Eat Dog was : " I see the sun shining through" - there ya go !

Nena - 99 Red Balloons
You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons
With the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message
"Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
99 red balloons go by
99 red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here
From somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
Where 99 red balloons go by
99 Decision Street
99 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by
[Instrumental Interlude]
99 Knights of the air
Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a Silverhero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scramble in the summer sky
As 99 red balloons go by
As 99 red balloons go by
99 dreams I have had
In every one a red balloon
It's all over and I'm standin' pretty
In this dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenier
Just to prove the world was here
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go

Something To Believe In
Will I see him on the TV
Preachin' 'bout the promised land
He tells me to believe in Jesus
And steals the money from my hand
Some say he was a good man
But Lord I think he sinned, yeah
Twenty-two years of mental tears
Cries a suicidal Vietnam vet
Who fought a losing war on a foreign shore
To find his country didn't want him back
Their bullets took his best friend in Saigon
Our lawyers took his wife and kids, no regrets
In a time I don't remember
In a war he can't forget
He cried "Forgive me for what I've done there
Cause I never meant the things I did"
Chorus:
And give me something to believe in
If there's a Lord above
And give me something to believe in
Oh, Lord arise
My best friend died a lonely man
In some Palm Springs hotel room
I got the call last Christmas Eve
And they told me the news
I tried all night not to break down and cry
As the tears rolled down my face
I felt so cold and empty
Like a lost soul out of place
And the mirror, mirror on the wall
Sees my smile it fades again
Chorus
Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now
The things I didn't know then
Road you gotta take me home
Solo
I drive by the homeless sleeping on a cold dark street
Like bodies in an open grave
Underneath the broken old neon sign
That used to read JESUS SAVES
A mile away live the rich folks
And I see how they're living it up
While the poor they eat from hand to mouth
The rich is drinkin' from a golden cup
And it just makes me wonder
Why so many lose, so few win
Chorus
You take the high road
And I'll take the low road
Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now
The things I didn't know then
And give me something to believe in
Song by Poison

I've always quite liked "I saw two shooting stars last night, I wished on them, but they were only satellites, it's wrong to wish on space hardware." from Billy Bragg's 'A New England' (covered of course, by Kirsty McColl).
The thread does say "rock lyrics" and the only rock band I ever really liked were Ultravox, although they barely qualify as a rock band in many people's eyes, but they did write great lyrics. It's difficult to choose but I'll go for New Europeans from the Vienna album:
On a crowded beach washed by the sun
He puts his headphones on
His modern world revolves around
The synthesizer's song

Town Called Malice - The Jam
Better Stop dreaming of the quiet life cos it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for that runaway bus cos those rosy days are few
And stop apologising for the things you never done
Time is short and life is cruel
but it's up to us to change this town called malice.
Rows and rows of disused milkers that will die in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious
In a town called malice, yeah
Struggle after struggle, year after year
The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice
I'm almost stone cold dead in a town called malice
Ooh yeah
A whole streets belief in Sunday's roast beef
Gets dashed against the Co-Op
To either cut down on beer or the kids new gear
It's a big decision in a town called malice
Ooh yeah
Ghost of a steam train echoes down my track
Its at the moment bound for nowhere just going round and round,Ohh
Playground kids and creaking swings, lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will but,
I'd sooner put some joy back in this town called malice.
Yeah
Weller writes such excellent songs.
Favourite lyric of all time is from Nothing But Flowers by the Talking Heads, a song imagining a future world where modern trappings have been sacrificed in favour of a return to nature, where factories, parking lots and real estate have disappeared and people live an idyllic lifestyle off the land, eating nuts, berries and rattlesnakes
"If this is paradise I wish I had a lawnmower"
Quite a few, so gonna post them mainly as links, if that's OK for people. Will give you a snippet of them, then link, how 'bout that?
Spite - The Rainmakers
In spite of you, In spite of me,
Oh yeah in spite of everything it's pretty good to be alive...

Rock & Roll Dreams Come Through - Jim Steinman (later butchered by Meatloaf)
Once upon a time was a backbeat,
Once upon a time all the chords came to life,
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings,
If you hang on to a chorus, it can get you through the night...

Hammer To Fall - Queen
Here we stand or here we fall
History won't care at all
Make the bed, light the light
Lady mercy won't be home tonight

"The only way to change things is to shoot men who arrange things" - There There My Dear, Dexy's Midnight Runners.
'You don't need to be well to be wealthy but you've got to be whole to be holy' - Hallowed Be Thy Name - Gregg Lake. Not my favourite song by a long shot but that line has always stuck with me.

Good call for Bowie's 'Five Years' - a poetic elegy about the end of the world. Check out also 'Cygnet Committee' - Bowie at his most visionary!
Many of Jethro Tull's compositions are worthy of note on the lyrical front - I particularly like 'Thick as a Brick'. It's too long to copy here, so just Google it.
But the master of the lyric has to be the legendary Roy Harper. Here's a couple of verses from 'Commune' and 'The Monster';
"And I watched her making her first daisy chain
As her nipples hung hard in suggestion
And naked, gnat-bitten we drifted the plain
In the hazy dessert of sensation
And we dreamt of all the loves we'd known
And we never never thought of the sorrow
With forelocks wound on the primrose down
In the wood by the empty long barrow."
"The revolution's always over
The apocalypse is now
All hands are on the keyboard
Hardly any on the plough"
