OK..... this will test your memory - your musical knowledge and skills of deduction all at the same time .;) Here goes.
The year was 1979 ( I think ) and the song was a top 10 hit for a blonde haired British guy ( I think ). It was a one hit wonder for the artist. The guys name was John ( again - I think ) and the video was shot with the singer strolling along a sandy beach.
I think he was a bit of a teen heartthrob for about 3 minutes that year.:p
The song itself was a ballad and possibly had the sound of waves in the music.
I know my clues are .... well........pretty rubbish at best - but does anyone have any idea what this song is called and if so - could you please post a link ?
This ones been bugging me for days............
Not Johnny Logan, What's Another Year from 1980 is it?

No Herr Grunwald. I remember him all too clearly despite trying to forget his dreadful Eurovision songs for the best part of 20 years......:D
To be honest - I dont think I liked the song very much at the time .... but find it strange that I haven't heard the track on the radio in well over 20 years ... and whenever I mention it to anyone from my generation I get blank stares !
Another clue - I think the title of the song was ONE word... missing, dreaming , wishing.... or something like that .

Uncannily close to the video.... but no cigar Rossonbantam. :D
but thanks for trying..........
I'm sure the song I'm after has the sound of waves splashing against the shore throughout the duration of the track ..... at least I think I'm sure.

John foxx?
John Foxx sang ballads Danny ? :)
Sorry... but errmmm ...no.
Well he did sing some ballads - theres even a blurb on Amazon of an album he fetched out featuring some of his ballads, also your description matches ( ish ) the cover of his early 1980 release

Hi
I think the song you're looking for is 'Only Crying' by Keith Marshall. Can't find a video and the year was 1981 but everything else fits.
OMG - just looked him up - he was in 'HELLO'
I actually bought Tell Him by them when it came out all those years ago

You're welcome! http://forums.doyouremember.co.uk/images/icons/icon7.gif
I remember this song from when it came out. I might even have it somewhere in my vinyl collection! (the late 70s/early 80s were my era when it came to buying singles) It was the bit about crashing waves that gave it away - the song came straight to mind.
Glad I could help!
