Has anyone out there got a new Raleigh Chopper or had a go on one? WHat are they like? Are they anything like as good as the original?

Never had one :( I used to make my bikes out of old bits, only one brake, whack on some Cow Horn handlebars etc.. Great for scrambling and wheelies :D

I turned my handlebars over on my racer once. Does that count?

My grandad made me a custom-made chopper bike from old parts! I loved it!!

As for the new chopper my hubby doesn't rate it!

They're too expensive for what they are really as well....wish I'd have kept mine and sold it on Ebay!!!

Is that the one with the massive rear wheel that they sell in Toys R Us?

Yep..they'd be the Raleigh Chopper bikes!

Just depressed myself with how much money I could have even for my knackered old chopper - wondering if my dad might have it tucked away in the shed somewhere.....hmmmm.....

Where were they originally above the first P in chopper?

yes, a three gear shift stick, which I always thought was one of the coolest things about a Chopper. Seems silly to have remade them without it:cry:
Saddle is different too

Yeah, mine is a modern repro. So there have been a few changes to the original styling....like Daz said the ger shifts no longer on the cross beam bar, I read on some official Raleigh fans sight that the changes were made due to safety concerns i.e. coming off the bike and hurting your ahem :o crown jewels!

I would have thought it was so you didn't have to take a hand off the steering to change gear..bloody nanny state:rolleyes::D

I never had one of those as a kid, but I've been toying with the idea of buying one. Might buy an old one though, with the gear lever in the right place!

The MKIV is cool, but I do actually wish they hadn't changed the seat and kept the gear lever in the right place....

Worth buying a MKIV as I still get peeps cheering or reacting as I ride around on mine.....:)

Love it!

Bet it costs more for an old one than the repro !

people pay up to £200 for a repro when you can pick up a nice mk2 for the same price if you look hard enough,

Yes there was (in order of size descending) the Chopper, Tomahawk, Chipper and Chippy. The Chippy had solid tyres if I remember correctly.
Personally I loved my Purple Chopper (oo err).
Regarding the price of them now I recently saw an episode of 'Cash in the Attic' or something similar and one sold for £80....the people were chuffed with that but I bet they wouldn't have been if they had known how much they go for on Ebay.

Dont like the new ones with funny seat, and a sticker for the gears.Remember my cousin having a "proper" one and even with the warning label, held on the back while on roller skates.Shes still got the scar on her chin to this day lol.

I too have just bought my first chopper , although its not as clean as yours and its the health and safety mans worst nightmare , its a mk1 .

But its stripped at the moment waiting to go to a paintshop to be returned to its original colour.

If anyone is interested there is the worlds biggest chopper meeting this weekend at Billing Aquadrome , retro bikers dreamland

I had a 2nd hand Budgie with some Chopper styling, though it had same sized tyres & no gear change.

Like many smaller bikes it only had a front brake(!) but that didn't stop me from learning to ride it without stablisers.

Does anyone recall the chopper sport? or at least that's what I think it was called, it had racing handlebars

Yep it was a mutant looking thing called a Chopper Sprint, there was one in my local bike shop, I hated it as it was the "racing" type bikes I wanted to get away from.
But its ultra collectable now, apparently.
Here's an old photo, circa 1972, of my Mk 1 red Chopper, ooher missus, don't even mention the flag, ahem.........1612

Is this the one where health and safety went mad and put a sticker where the gear stick should be?

sixtyten
30-01-2010, 00:27
I don't remember a sticker where the gear stick used to be, just no gear stick.
As bikes go, the Chopper was always safety concious. it had a patch over the banana seat saying it wasn't designed for two passengers

I think the sticker is actually a picture of the gear stick lol.And i remember the warning saying about two passangers on the original chopper, but we used to sit over that, and even drag a third kid behind wearing skates and holding on the the bar at the back
