Having a real nostalgia-fest this week for the 80s Eagle, of which I was an avid reader from Issue 1 (metal stick-pin Eagle badge). Just trying to remember everything that was in the early issues. Obviously, Doomlord (ahh, the original photo-stories), Dan Dare (grandson of the original, I seem to remember), Manix, The Tower King, The Collector...Anybody remember anything else that was in it, or have scans?

I remember one front cover had the photostrip actor as Doomlord...looked dead cool. Would love to see a website full of all the scanned stories.

Wasn't Invasion 1984 a storyline? Aliens conquering the world etc...?

Ooh, I dunno. Doesn't ring a bell, but then my brain's not as full of bells as it used to be. Would be fab to find out. And yeah - would love a "Complete Doomlord" book or somesuch - I know there's one available that shows the whole "Deathlords" strip - but by then they'd gone to drawings, when for me, the photostrip Doomlords were much more effective.

Magigreen - coool - don't remember that one either (except one Collector story where a kid who was a snotty gamer got pulled inside a game and basically blasted to bits by aliens! They were creepy, those Collector stories, you just KNEW something dreadful was going to happen ;o) )

re;The Computer Warrior. From what I remember the kid got sucked into real computer games that where around at the time. I remember him being sucked into a Top Gun video game and Another World. It was really one big advert for computer games but I loved that strip.

Eagle merged with Tiger in the mid-80s, which is when I started buying it. I drew a picture based on 'The Computer Warrior' where the hero - Bobby Patterson - was competing in 'The Great American Cross Country Road Race' game (apparently only available on the Commodore 64), and it was featured in the 'Luck Of The Draw' section of the comic.

Readers of 'Eagle & Tiger' at that time will also remember Dan Dare, Doomlord, The 13th Floor (with computer Max), Billy's Boots (a Tiger strip), and Dial A Dawn Destructor (or D.A.D.D.).

Fab stuff - 13th Floor coming back to me now, and that Amstor thing looks familiar. Certainly was still with it by the time of the Doomlord Show...Anyone remember the early Manix photo-strip called something like "Rise of the Uglies"? Some scientist was making people super-strong, but also making them super-stupid and super-ugly in the process? Ended with them putting him in his own machine of course...

Still preferred the photo strips to the later strips, though-they made Eagle stand out.

I started buying Eagle properly in 1986 when The Computer Warrior started playing Gauntlet - was a huge fan of that strip. Started buying back issues at our local market so have issues from 82 onwards....and every single issue from 1985-1990, can't bear to throw them.
Fave strips

Survival
Doomlord
The 13th Floor

Survival was a great strip but the last few episodes stank so hard it was depressing. It's worse even than the last episode of Lost.
The dodgy masks story of Manix was called "Manix meets the Uglies". I bought Eagle right from issue 1 and I could never get over the switch from the first Manix actor to the second bald one. And the drawn version was terrible. Like "Walk or Die", which as a photostrip was great but failed as drawn art.
Best story was 'the House of Daemon'. Fact.
I've scanned all my Eagles and am (slowly) tarting up the scans. Trying hard to resist re-reading them from the scans as I'm doing it but not really succeeding :D
Looking forward to when it's done and compiling all the Doomlord's into one continuous 'graphic novel' :)

Doomlord was terrific. The image of this skull faced alien drinking tea and watching Coronation Street with Mrs Souster, his landlady, has stayed with me for years (Servitor Vek was addicted to Corrie).

I remember it. It was re-launched in 1982 IIRC, those scans seem to be from post-1984 after Scream was merged into it, Scream is discussed elsewhere on this forum somewhere.

I remember that they did a 3D version with the coloured glasses. It was all the rage at the time, I think Tomorrow's World had a 3D edition. I also remember a top-shelf magazine doing a 3D edition...

I think they did a wall chart for the 1982 World Cup, the only time I ever took any interest in it.

I am sure I saw a book about the 1980s Eagle in a bookshop recently. I have had a quick look on Amazon but I can't find one for this period.

I remember it! I'm trying to remember whether Doomlord was originally in Eagle or not as one of my friends couldn't stand Eagle (He only read 2000AD and Scream whereas I read all three) and yet I remember him being a major fan of Doomlord from the very beginning so that has got me scratching my head a bit.

The 13th Floor and Monster were definitely Scream originals and I seem to remember Eagle had a similar story to Monster which was a cross between Monster and Stig of the Dump. lol

Doomlord first appeared in the first issue of the revived Eagle, on 27th March 1982. He never appeared in any other title.

I remember a strip called Death Wish, about a horribly burned stuntman who wore a mask.

I only periodically read The Eagle, I was too young to remember the original and found it in many ways a little too macarbre for my taste, preferring the more conventional military storys in The Battle etc. But it did have some great tales;

The Collector scared the hell out of me, I remember the story where these 2 guys rear a carnivorous plant that ends up eating them gave me nightmares

Doomlord, again amazingly callous and sadistic, the way it just arbitarily killed off people was horrifying. I never liked it in the photo form (save that for the girl's romance comics) but got much better once it was drawn

Manix was my favourite, again rubbish as a photo strip, I remember 2 characters in one story that were supposed to be transformed into monsters and this was achieved by having them wear masks that looked like they came from a joke shop. Also they kept changing Manix's appearance presumably because the actor who played him got a better gig? Once it was drawn it was excellent, then he could deal with hijacked nuclear submarines and knock down attacking jets by hurling the tailplane from a shot-down transport aircraft at it.

I also liked the one where there were two brothers, one of whom had been mutated by radiation (back when nuclear power was the big scary and not the solution to global warming). Was Death Wish in The Eagle? The story of a millionaire playboy who was horribly disfigured and was incredibly brave in his adventures because he no longer cared if he lived or died?

The 80's Eagle - had loads of these in comic but were ruined when i moved house in the late 80's. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can get a electronic scans of all the old 80's Eagles?? What i find irritating is that the classic Dan Dare have had vol after vol of reprints in hard back - yet the 80's Eagle/Dan Dare = nothing and he had some really good stories one of my favs was 'The Flesh Eaters' lol. Would be grateful for any advice :D

Hi. I kept my first copy (27th March 1982) and recently bought all the ones up to and including when it changed format to a normal comic. They (just!) fit nicely into one of those cardboard filing/storage boxes. It is a great comic and I loved buying it back in 1982/83. They do show up on ebay regularly for a decent price per issue.

Hi all,

Just found this great thread as I was reminiscing about the old Eagle comic earlier tonight. A couple of the stories that I used to love that haven't been mentioned yet (I think they were Eagle anyway) were Leopard of Lime St and another that I can't remember the name of about a secret agent who'd been 'augmented' to be super strong and fast and he had a computer sort of printed onto his skull.

I did a bit of digging and found most the 80s Eagle comics from 82-89 including many annuals and specials at a *cough* certain bay frequented by pirates *cough*. Hope that may be of use to some peeps :)

Two good hand-drawn strips from the 80s Eagle which stuck in my mind were The Tower King - a post apocalyptic adventure where society is reduced to steam-powered medievalism - and The Fifth Horseman: a very strange yet compelling story where the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse appear and begin striking various places on the earth; as the story progressed, it transpired that the four horsemen were actually alien robots. Weird.

Anyone remember Joe Soap?
