  • Central European folk tales

Around 1970, an uncle gave me a book of (if I recall correctly) Czechoslovakian fairy/folk tales, it was a hardback with several colour illustrated plates. I can only remember (incompletely) one of the stories now, about a forrest where lived a dwarf who stole the eyes from the head of anyone who fell asleep there. A young girl's father did so, and she ended up in the dwarf's cave sorting through a mound of eyeballs looking for her father's eyes. My uncle denies that he would ever have given me such a book, although this was the era of Pat Troughton as Dr Who, Escape into Night and The Singing Ringing Tree, when clearly no-one thought frightening children did them any harm. Does this story or the book ring bells with anyone? I would love to re-read this book now. Many thanks!
