  • The Wide Range Readers

Does anyone remember being given these to read at primary school in the seventies? Something got me thinking about these the other day. They were a series of educational books with a mixture of short stories, poems and factual stories. The ones I can remember are The Owl and the Pussycat, The Story of Shoes (a history), a fictional story about the Great Fire of London, and a story called Kee Nog Stan, which is about a Scotsman who visits a foreign country, talks to everyone in English and thinks the phrase "Kee nog stan", which means "I don't understand" is someone's name. I thought that story was hilarious.

The books were colour coded (Green Book, Blue Book etc) and also numbered.
The present is a foreign country. They do things differently here.
