  • School : Learning to read book seriers

    Evening forum.

I was at primary school between '72 and '76, and I remember having to read a series of books about 'Tom, Dick, and Spot the Dog'. Or at least I think those were the names of the characters. We were only allowed to move up to the next book when the teacher was satisfied that we had read and understood the story. We could only collect the new book from a stand outside the Head Teachers office, and I remember checking when waiting in line to go into the hall for Assembly. If my new book was ready for collection then I'd jostle to get the front of the line on the way out so I could sneak over and get the book and still be back to class on time.

I can't quite picture the books but I should think there as a lot of repetition of key works and mainly pictures. I would really like to see some imagines of the book again (maybe even buy a few if they ever come into my local bookshop). Anybody else remember these? I did search for the character names but nothing that came back looked that familiar.

I was at First School in the mid 1970s and I learned to read with Janet and John books. There was a dog called Spot in them as well. These were the UK versions of existing books that went by other names. I can still remember learning words for the first time like 'Ball' and sentences such as 'See Spot run'.

Dick & Jane, spot was originally a cat but later became a dog.

Having started school in '64 it was Dick and Dora for me, I wonder if anyone would call their Daughter Dora anymore? I dont suppose a lad would want to be called Dick these days...

I presume Dora The Explorer has not popularised the name in recent years.
