  • Favourite old car/s

My all time favorite old car is the Mk1 Escort in it's various guises. Mexico, RS1600, RS2000 and Twin Cam are the best ones. I used to own one in the mid to late 90's at was 1100l when I first bought it but removed the 1000 engine and eventually replace that with two 1600's and lastly a 1700 bored out Mexico engine with all the bits running through a MK2 1600 Sport gearbox with quickshift and RS alloys to finish. Oh how I miss it great fun getting the back end sliding in the wet & snow, oppositelocking round corners. . Eventually ran out of time, money, age so it stayed in my garage for two years then I sold the lot and all i have left is the three Mexico wing/boot badges.

Favorite cars the old Fords. Cortinas Mk1/2/3/4/5 Anglas, Mk1 Transits, Granadas Mk1/2 (good banger cars ), Capri Mk1/2/3 etc etc....
    sigpic I WANT ONE NOW!!!!!

I remember my bro-in-law had a Mk1 Escort, spent all day one Saturday painting underseal all over the bottom of it 'cos I was small enough to crawl underneath it! Dad had a Mk2 Cortina and an Anglia at various times, I always liked the Anglia best, don't know why, just the shape I think

i loved the old rover SD1...3.5 litre v8 engine.
my old fella had one, unfortunatly it was like the forth bridge......once you'd finished touching up all the rust it was time to start again.

          Oh, I am so jealous.
Always wanted a Rover SD1 but couldnt afford one.
Still see the occasional one now and still have a soft spot for them.

But my favourite car that I have owned was a Citroen XM I bought new in 1990.
Sheer luxury and drove like a Rolls Royce. Was built like a tank
Cost a fortune to fix if it broke down and actually spent most of its time hooked up to an AA van!!
When it worked though it was great.

After writing the above post I remembered a weird car I owned for about 6 months till it fell apart.
A 1974 Austin Apache, built in South Africa Had the front of an Austin 1100, (but with square headlights) and the back of a Triumph 2000!!! The trim was from all the old bits left from earlier BL cars.
Honest... If you dont believe me have a look here http://www.austinapache.co.uk/

Mine was bright orange and people used to look at it as though it was a "cut and shut" or something.

Sorry for going slightly off thread.

Thought the Escorts Mks I & II had a design way before their time. My faves tho would be the Morris Minor, Citroen 2CV, VW Beetle ( all the farmers here had one 30yrs. ago ).
Into the 5th Millennium & beyond...!

Rab my dad had a seemingly bright yellow lada, he said he'd bought it because it was cheap to run and it had a starting handle, being a kid thought this ment the car was like a wind up toy, doh, but you're right theywere bog standard interiors. I wanted the Capri as I said or a Beetle, Aston Martin DB5, or a Ford Probe in later years, though thats was supposed to be the updated, up graded Capri.,or a mini Cooper just because of the Italian Job!!!!!

                          2cv

My favourite has got to be the Citroen 2CV, I've got a pair of them in my garage. Ladas may have basic interiors but they look like Rollers compared to 2CV!

I always loved the Alfasuds. there was an Alfa Romeo garage round the corner from me when i was young late 70s early 80s.
They were stylish with great interiors and dials, they also had big steering wheels, and looked cool. even the bog standard ones were stylish too.
They had revvy little engines with a distinct ting about them.
You dont see them any more because they dissovled in the rain, shame really.
i think they were far superior to anything produced in the UK in this era (apart from the rust and unreliability) .
                            Lancias were nice to.
