    Who remembers CB fox hunts?

A group of CB radio enthusiasts would congregate in their cars at the local B&Q carpark or somewhere similar. Each driver would pay £5 and all the money would go into the pot. One CB driver would play the fox. He/she would drive off & park somewhere in the middle of nowhere and transmit in one minute bursts every other minute on the assigned channel. Everyone else would home in on the signal and the first to find the fox would win the pot. Sometimes this was done for charity and the pot would go to the designated charity. The local police would be out patrolling pilling over participating cars giving out tickets for speeding.

Another charity thing was the continuous modulation marathon. Two breakers would host the assigned channel for a week each doing a twelve hour shift. People would come on air and pledge an amount which they would send to the PO box of one of the hosts and that host would send the donator their QSL card in acknowledgement.

When a child went missing CB operators would organise their own radio communication to help the police in the search; just as HAM operators sometimes do today.

Those were the days before internet chatrooms & VOIP/Skype

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.
