  • 10'o clock horses

when i was little and was being a pain at bedtime my mum and dad threatened me with the 10'oclock horses,i.e.if i didnt get to bed by 10 the horses would come to take me away.
i dont know if its just a regional thing (most of my friends remember the horses too)
my parents never elaborated on the horses, but just the thought of them had me quaking under my blankets!!
has anybody else heard of this?
by the way,i grew up to be a fairly sane adult and get along just fine with my parents (and horses) surprising really!!!

We were told the boogie man would get us,if we wandered more than a street away from home .It worked though!

Nan had the requisite Bogeyman in her bedroom closet. Ginny Greenteeth lived in the local beck/canal/river.

My mum used to say it to us when we were kids
I heard it came from years ago men with horse and carts used to come empty the human waste from the old outside toilets

That's why sewage is sometimes known as night soil.
