If you have bought a record, tape, CD, paid for download MP3, you have the right to copy it to any format you choose to. If you're a DJ you can Rip CD's to your PC and deliver your performance from that.

If you bought a Video tape or recorded from a TV station you can copy it to any format you choose.

If you bought a DVD, you can play it on any device, but you can't copy it to another format legally. Not that anybody will get out off bed if you copy it to AVI or MP4 and you view it on your laptop or desktop or any other device with a hard disk. Nor do they seem to if you download (Free) an AVI or MP4.

If you buy a CDG (Karaoke Disk) you cannot do anything but play it in a personal or commericial venue. This format is the most shaky and sensitive to surface scratches. Generally affects the text playback not the music. Every KJ knows this and most busy KJ's have illegally backed their disks up to CDR or DVD and used the copy. Not many are getting out of bed because of this risk mitigation exercise though.

What the copyright protection boyos are getting out of bed for are KJ's who copy their CDG's to a computer (MP3+G) and deliver their performance from a PC. Big Fines. Strangely enough they generally hit the venue for allowing it as well as the KJ. Some venues are buying a more expensive license though no one knows whether this will protect them in the future.

Now whilst the internet doesn't have many free sources of MP3+G files around. Many sites that tried to do this have been shut down worldwide. The situation is that not many karaoke suppliers of paid for CDG disks also allow the download of paid for MP3+G files. There are plenty of sites selling Hard disks preloaded with 10000 MP3+G files. £100 is the street price. Some sites are warning buyers to delete MP3+G files for CDG's that they don't own.

The point is that this situation is trying to buck reality bigtime. If you deliver a Karaoke performance from a PC, you don't have to buy a Karaoke player, a risk avoided. You also avoid the risk of CDG disks crapping out on you also.
