    Foot and Mouth, Bird Flu and now SWINE FLU!

    Hi Guys,

    Having just watched the news, everyone's getting very excited and panic stricken about "Swine Flu" (is that the same as Swine Fever?) Do you remember the Foot and Mouth outbreak at the end of the 90's? Everyone panicked and the disinfectant mats came out left, right and centre... I don't recall hearing in all the mayhem of anyone catching it!! Same as the "Flesh Eating Virus" in the mid 90's. I have a... shall we call her.. "very well padded" sister who thought she had caught that. Obviously I set her mind at rest with the comforting words "well, even if you have caught it, I reckon it'll get a good 6 months out of you...") ...nice.

    Scary thing is,the Scottish couple are in a hospital about 20 mins from me.

      Its harmless out of Mexico anyway apparently, another media scare story.

        I thought I heard something like that.Wonder how there are so many dying there and no where else.Maybe they don't have the meds.

          I think its people who've been in direct contact with pigs that are dying. Also dont think they have the hygiene and medical standards we have here.

            Only ungulates are affected by Foot & Mouth, it was the damage to the farming industry that caused all the panic, not risk of human infection. The flesh-eating bug is still alive and kicking, it's just not newsworthy any more.

            The worrying thing about Bird Flu and Swine Flu is that they've jumped the species barrier, the viruses are able to mutate so vaccines can rapidly become obsolete. If a potentially fatal virus can mutate to attach itself to something like the common cold we're in big trouble.

            According to WHO Swine Flu is being passed from human to human.
