Two haunting songs that come to mind
are... "The Bright Elusive Butterfly of Love"
    writ by Bob Lind
    and "Johnny Remember Me...."
writ I think by Joe Meek

Both from the 1960s .. Bob Lind's song is so different and unique... how did he come to write it ? I think he packed in pop music and became a novelist.
Joe Meek of course shot himself after having a brilliant career writing and producing songs..
like Telstar for eg that got to No 1 in the USA
Prob a 3rd song I could propose is
..... If you could read my mind... one of the most brilliant songs of all time.

Some very haunting tracks in there silverbirch.

Goldley and Creme - Under Your Thumb is kinda spooky........ also Clannad and theme from Harry's Game gives me goosebumps on my goosebumps.

"Elusive Butterfly" was a hit in Britain for Val Doonican rather than Bob Lind.

Ennio Morricone's Chi Mai and The Mission are fairly haunting.

And some of Karl Jenkins' works.

I think Kate Bush has a hauntingly beautiful voice. I remember being stunned by 'Wuthering Heights' when it I first heard it.

This is very uncool to admit, but Bodicea by Enya has a haunting quality I love

Julee Cruise (debut album Floating Into the Night) and also her work on "Falling" on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Kate Bush - definitely - this one she has about a sound weapon getting loose really gives ya the willies. One of my haunting favorites is "The Ghost in You" by the Psychedelic Furs. Oninawa Song by Ryuichi Sakamoto also sticks with me - makes me think about what happened on Okinawa during WWII.

I would have to go with the instrumental version of Forbidden Colours (must track down the DVD - last shot of that film just floors me) - a beautiful piece of work.

Requiem from the Akira soundtrack - covers the lot.

O Mio Babbino Caro - utter perfection.
