            Re: your 80's top 10

I am going to give this some serious thought. Certainly, the already mentioned 'Take on Me' and 'Wonderful Life' are likely to be included, along with tracks from Depeche Mode, Erasure and Alison Moyet.

I've had a bit of a think and this is what I came up with.

              Baggy Trousers - Madness
Walk This Way - Run DMC & Aerosmith
              1 In 10 - UB40
I Want To Break Free - Queen
The Lunatics - Fun Boy Three
Antmusic - Adam And The Ants
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me - Culture Club
Wherever I Lay My Hat - Paul Young
              Body Talk - Imagination
              Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics

I'll probably think of some more I should have put in, but there you go.

Could do a top 400 cos i've got an 80's playlist on my hi fi that's got 400 tracks on it (would be more but thats the max it'll do) and even there was a lot of deliberation over some. A top 10 will take some time.

                  Re: your 80's top 10

Right this has been bugging me since the question was posted. I awoke this morning and it was the 1st thing I thought about. I've tried to be as true to the 80's as possible. By that I mean that I have discounted tunes and artists that I have discovered since the 80's like Sisters of Mercy and Fade to grey extended version which is one of my favourites. I've also excluded recent remixes (Steve Angello's mix of Sweet dreams is fantastic). So what have I based my selection on? Basically, which vinyl was hammered at the time I bought it i.e. never off my turntable. I can't list them in any particular order because they all got played to death and most of them are 12" versions because that's mainly what I bought.

                  1. The Sun always shines on TV (extended version) - A-ha
                  2. Everything counts (in larger amounts) - Depeche Mode
                  3. The Reflex (Dance Mix) - Duran Duran
                  4. Wings of a dove (Blue Train Mix) - Madness
                  5. True Faith '87 (Shep Pettibone remix) - New Order
                  6. Always on my mind (extended dance mix) - Pet Shop Boys
                  7. Let's go crazy (extended version) - Prince
                  8. This charming man (New York mix) - The Smiths
                  9. Open your heart - Human league
                  10. Blind - Talking Heads
                  "GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER"

In no particular order, and maybe not the best songs, but they get me going:

                    1. Forever Young - Alphaville
                    2. Take on Me - A-Ha
                    3. If you leave - OMD
                    4. Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth
                    5. Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benetar
                    6. Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood (and the Power of Love)
                    7. Touch me - Samantha fox
                    8. Our House - Madness
                    9. How soon is now - The Smiths
                    10. oh yeah - Yello

I could go forever, honorable mentions go to pet shop boys, madonna, new order, Rick Astley, depeche mode, cyndi lauper, that "I need a hero song" from the movie footloose, corey hart, platinum blonde, and perhaps the greatest song of all time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jEnTSQStGE

Not Bonnie Tyler's Holding On For A Hero, which was once used by Channel 4 as a theme for the American Football show.
                      The Trickster On The Roof

                        Re: your 80's top 10

This is interesting. I'm compelled to mix what I've learned since with what I thought back then.

                        Valley Girl - Frank Zappa
                        It's Raining - Shakin' Stevens
                        Telegraph Road - Dire Straits
Night Patrol - Robert Cray Band
Union of the Snake - Duran Duran
Crockett's Theme - Jan Hammer (although his performance on Top of the Pops was inexcusable)
Machines (Back to Humans) - Queen
Never Too Much - Luther Vandross
Kids in America - Kim Wilde
                        Little Red Corvette - Prince

I've cheated - I went more with a top ten feel - otherwise I would leave out artists that should be there to fit in more songs by the rest.

When it got to the 'guitar' bit, Hammer stepped away from the four or more keyboards, slung another over his shoulder and started to move around like his mobile keyboard was a guitar - it was shameless!

Only the performance of Brother Louie (can't remember who that was now - keep thinking Pat Sharp, but sure that's wrong) is worse - when you could hear a guitar strumming, the one with the guitar was waving his hand in the air, when you couldn't hear it, he was so-called strumming. Yes, I know it's miming, but it's also incompetent.

Mime very badly probably, in keeping with most other artists on the show.
