  • R.I.P. Simon Dee

I know, more 60's then anything else, but certainly a controversal character.
Faith in a limited ability and an overvaluation of his own worth were his downfall but he was immensley popular during his 15 minutes of fame.
Steve Coogan stole a lot from Simon for Alan Partridge which fits in neatly with our time-line.
Interesting man - I'm sure plenty will miss him.

I never experienced Dee first hand, but a few years ago channel 4 did a Dee night, with documentaries, and even a new special.
He was ahead of his time, but he blew it, big time. I got interested in his story.
He had it all, but his ego upset that many people that no one wanted to work with him anymore.
It's just like Lewis Collins. A charismatic actor who blew it all with ego.

In Simon Dees time, you couldn't afford to upset both the BBC and ITV.
Apart from going abroad, they were his only chance of getting any exposure in the UK.

It's different these days - One call to Channel 5 and he's back on the box again
