  • Prayers

I suppose it depends to some extent on whether you went to a church school or a state one. Although back in the seventies, most state schools were quite Christian centred - more so than these days.

I went to a state school, and we would always have a prayer in assembly and occasionally a 'grace' before lunch: "For what we are about to receive..."

But the prayer I recall most clearly, (and I'm talking Primary school here), was at the end of the day, just before the bell for the end of school:

    Hands together, softly so,
    Little eyes shut tight,
    Father, just before we go,
    Hear our prayer tonight,
    Amen.

There was a little tune to it that I can still recall.

Anyone else have memories of school prayers?

    At Lunch time

Thank you for the world so sweet,
thank you for the food we eat,
thank you for the birds that sing,
    thank you lord for everything.

We also sang the one at the end of the day, just after we'd put our chairs up on the table.

Can't recall any in Secondary School, maybe the Lord's Prayer in Assembly, but in juniors, there was a huge prayer book screwed to the wall, with a device fitted to turn the pages.
We'd have a different prayer everyday, and they would also play a piece of music, with the Album sleeve displayed so you could find out more if you wanted.
It was mainly classical or film music.

I was just talking to the wife about something similar to this today. Being in oz, she remembers singing the Australian national anthem plus 'God save the queen' in school assembly in primary school. I don't ever remember singing the national anthem in primary school (or any school for that matter) in England. I only remember singing hymns and choruses in assembly (eg. all things bright and beautiful, we are climbing Jesus' ladder, etc.), and this was a state run school. I wonder if anyone else remembers those blue song books we used to use? This was around the early 1980's.

            Yes I did this one!
There's nothing cuter than a room full of Juniors singing this together at the dinner tables!

I only remember The Lords Prayer apart from that at Assembly.

We sang the same one at the end of the day. I couldn't recall it myself, but my mam has a tape of me singing it. Awww.

                Re: Prayers

The blue books were 'Come and Praise' with the pictures of the weird looking 70s children on the front. I really liked some of those hymns. I was in a state school and I can remember singing the national anthem sometimes. It's embedded in my memory because of "send her victorious", when the entire assembly would turn to me and sing "send her Victoria"!

                        Second verse Marine boy !!

We are all thy children here,
                        Listen while we pray,
Keep us when the dark is here

                        Arr, Joybee. I love that.

Some time ago, I looked on the internet for this song/prayer, and I found:

We are all God's children here,
                        This is what we say,
Guard us through the coming night,
                        And throughout the day.
                        Amen.

But I've no idea whether we used your version, or mine, or a different one, or no second verse at all!

                        It's still a sweet memory.
