  • 'Course you can Malcolm!'

It occured to me recently that I still say this when someone says they can't do something!

This was from a 70s advert for Vicks Sinex as many of you will know. It's really stuck with me.

I can't find it on Youtube unfortunately.

      One of the classics...
Along witn the AA's "A very nice man" (which I used not that long ago)
and Maureen Lipman's "People will always need pots" and "...You've got an ology, you're a scientist!" for BT.
"It's never too late to have a happy childhood."

Another thing I still say is - 'That's handy Harry, stick it in the oven'.
This was from a Bird's Eye Pizza ad.

I remember all the kids in our school use to repeat that catchphrase '' course you can malcom '',but i cannot for the life of me figure out why they did it.Perhaps they use to ask each other daft questions,in order to be able to have the fun of saying it all the time?

              Re: 'Course you can Malcolm!'

              From memory,complete with speech effects:
Mal: Oh Bub (Mum) I can't take my exams blocked up like this
              Mum:'Course you can Malcolm.Try this.
Mal: Vick's Sinex Nasal Spray? I'll take it along.
Mum: Shouldn't need to.Lasts up to 8 hours.
              Mal: 8 hours(as in Yeah,right!)
              Later.........
              Mum:Well how did it go?
Mal: The Sinex? Didn't need it once.
              Mum: The exam,silly!
Mal:Mmmm, that smells good mum.(looking into Mum's cooking pot,and probably drooling into said pot)
Weird how a complete advert sticks in your mind.Cant remember when it came out but I'm coming 58 soon and it seems like yesterday.

I remember this advert too - it featured Nigel Plaskitt as Malcolm, who was also associated with Pipkins at the time - he was also the voice behind Hartley Hare, as I recall.

There was also another more recent advert that featured the catchphrase "Malcolm, Malcolm, Malcolm!" - I think it was for some kind of food?

                  Re: 'Course you can Malcolm!'

Yet another thing I say on occasion is from the milk adverts of the seventies.

When I say 'Watch out', I follow it with 'There's a Humphrey about'!

...And another thing I still say is, 'Nice one Cyril!' from the Wonderloaf advert in the early seventies.

                      Re: 'Course you can Malcolm!'

I found the Sinex advert on Youtube.

Even better, you can download the brilliant song by Splodgnessabounds based on the advert.

Malcolm Opera features the immortal line; "Blocked up noses aren't much fun - Quick! call for Malcolm's mum!"

It was sometime around 1974, possibly 75. I was living in the UK at that time, and I remember this advert quite clearly.

Not as clearly as you seem to, though...lol!
