Punk didn’t just appear overnight in 1976—it had roots stretching back to the mid-to-late 1960s. Bands like The Stooges and MC5 in the US, along with the raw edge of The Velvet Underground, were already stripping rock music down to something louder, rougher, and more confrontational.

By the early 1970s, a scene was bubbling under—particularly in New York at places like CBGB. That’s where bands like Ramones helped define the sound: fast, simple, and no-nonsense.

Then came the explosion…

Between 1976 and 1978, punk truly erupted—especially in the UK. Bands like the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Buzzcocks didn’t just make music—they made headlines. Whether it was controversial TV appearances, DIY record releases, or anti-establishment lyrics, punk became as much about attitude as sound.

It wasn’t just music either. Punk had a look—ripped clothes, safety pins, leather jackets, and bold hairstyles. Designers like Vivienne Westwood helped shape that visual identity, turning rebellion into something instantly recognisable.

But as quickly as it exploded, the original wave began to fragment…

By the end of the 70s, punk splintered into different directions:

Post-punk experimentation (think Joy Division)

New wave and more radio-friendly sounds

Hardcore punk in the US

Oi! and street punk in the UK

And yet—punk never really died. It just evolved.

From the political edge of the 80s, to the pop-punk revival of the 90s, right through to today’s underground scenes, its influence is everywhere.

When did you first discover punk?

Were you there during the ’76–’78 explosion, or did you come to it later?

Favourite bands—early pioneers or later offshoots?

And do you think punk still exists in the same spirit today?

For those of us who lived through it (or grew up hearing about it), Britpop wasn’t just a genre—it was a full-blown cultural movement that defined mid-90s Britain.

Emerging in the early 1990s as a reaction against American grunge, Britpop brought the focus back to British identity, storytelling, and everyday life. Bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and Suede led the charge—each with their own take on what “Britishness” meant.

At its core, Britpop was:

Catchy, guitar-driven music

Lyrics rooted in British culture, class, and everyday life

A deliberate contrast to the darker, introspective tones of grunge

The Peak: When Music Became a National Event

The movement arguably hit its peak in 1995 with the iconic chart battle between Roll with It and Country House—a moment that felt bigger than music. It was North vs South, working class vs art school, swagger vs irony.

It dominated headlines, playground debates, and pub conversations. You had to pick a side.

Culture, Cool Britannia & Controversy

Britpop spilled into wider culture—fashion, politics, and media. The era of “Cool Britannia” saw figures like Tony Blair embracing the scene, while bands became symbols of a confident, modern Britain.

But it wasn’t without its darker edges:

The excess and burnout of bands (particularly Oasis)

Criticism that it became too laddish and exclusionary

The eventual decline as musical tastes shifted toward electronica and post-Britpop

The Decline – What Happened?

By the late 90s, Britpop began to lose its spark. Albums became more experimental or bloated, and the original excitement faded. Radiohead’s shift with OK Computer in 1997 marked a clear turning point away from the Britpop sound.

Some bands evolved, others faded, but the unified “movement” feeling disappeared.

Influence & Legacy

Even now, Britpop’s DNA is everywhere:

Indie bands still draw from its sound and attitude

Its fashion and aesthetic continue to cycle back into style

It captured a uniquely British moment in time that still resonates

And for many of us, it’s tied to memories—school, nights out, football, Top of the Pops, and that feeling that British music was leading the world again.

Over to You…

Were you Team Oasis or Team Blur?

What songs instantly take you back to that era?

Did Britpop really “die,” or did it just evolve?

And do you think we’ll ever see a movement like it again?

Does anyone else remember all the talk about backwards messages in songs back in the 80s/90s?

I’m sure this was one of those things that spread around school playgrounds and older siblings’ record collections. You’d hear that if you played certain tracks backwards, there were hidden messages buried in them.

Bands like The Beatles were always at the centre of it—especially the whole “Paul is dead” thing—and I definitely remember people mentioning Revolution 9 as one to try.

Then there was Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, which seemed to come up all the time whenever this topic was mentioned. I don’t think anyone I knew had actually done it properly—but everyone knew someone who had

And of course, this was all in the days of:

Trying to spin a vinyl backwards without scratching it

Holding down rewind on a cassette and guessing where to stop

Or just listening really hard and convincing yourself you could hear something!

I’ve also read that some bands like Electric Light Orchestra and Pink Floyd actually did mess around with reverse audio on purpose—but probably more as a joke than anything sinister.

So I’m curious:

Did anyone here ever actually try playing a song backwards back then?

Were there any specific tracks you remember being talked about?

Or was it all just one big case of us hearing what we thought we should hear?

Feels like one of those classic pre-internet mysteries that everyone half-believed at the time.

Would be great to hear what others remember! Also, any funny ones that aren’t supposed to actually say anything — so it comes out gibberish?

I thought it might be fun to start a thread about misheard lyrics—those moments when you’ve confidently sung along to a song for years, only to find out you’ve been completely wrong

I’ll kick things off:

When I was 8 or 9, I thought that in the chorus of the song ‘Sit Down’ by James, they were actually singing “Oh Sadam, Oh Sadam” instead of “Oh sir down, Oh sit down”. This was in reference to Sadam Hussain, as I was aware of Gulf War at that tender age. I thought they wrote a song about him.

For years, my dad got the lyrics wrong to ‘Headlong’ by Queen. He kept singing “Get your rushing hands off” instead of “And your rushing Headlong”. It annoyed me so much.

Would love to hear yours—especially the ones you were convinced were right for years.

Bonus points if it completely changed the meaning of the song

I spent years thinking “Every Breath You Take” was a nice, romantic song… turns out it’s essentially about stalking.

Also assumed “Summer of ’69” was just a bloke reminiscing about a particular year. Bit naive in hindsight.

And somehow “Relax” was just a catchy tune on the radio that nobody thought to question.

Makes you wonder what else completely went over our heads at the time.

What songs did you only properly understand years later?

But really good. I taped it off the radio, probably radio 1 because that's all I listened to.

It's a male singer and very ballady but still indie sounding. I could sing it if it helped, but the words fail me. The only lyric I recall is something like "things will be better when we were young." (which is probably wrong as it doesn't make sense)sung three times then lots of high notes, almost falsetto. The band name had the word BLUE or OYSTER in it. It wasn't blue oyster cult as Grok keeps telling me. Nor was it OYSTERBAND. It was firmly 90s. It wasn't the Bluetones or BLUE. It wasn't a famous band at all. So not DEACON BLUE.

That was the only time I heard that song on the radio, when I taped it. And they never had another one of the radio etc. But it was a FANTASTIC and miserable song.

I actually tracked the song down already, maybe ten years ago but flipping lost track of it!

Anyone?

update...there is a site that lets you upload a song and then it names it. I'll try that if you guys can't help. I'm not much of a good singer and the song is all high notes. I suppose I could pitch shift it.
