  • The Masterson Inheritance

I don't know how many people remember this, but I used to love it.

'The Masterson Inheritance' was a Radio 4 comedy series from the early '90s, each episode of which was billed as an improvised historical saga of a family (the Mastersons) at war with itself. There were 6 players - Lee Simpson (who usually narrated the story), Paul Merton, Josie Lawrence, Caroline Quentin, Jim Sweeney and Phelim McDermot. Each episode would create a story set in a particular period in time, e.g. World War 1, Victorian London, the court of King Arthur and so on, and the setting could be anything from a castle or cruise liner to a circus, townhouse or battlefield hospital.

The story incorporated elements suggested by the studio audience at the start of each show, and the title of each story was also taken from an audience suggestion. Usually, each of the cast would play more than one part, and it was all totally improvised live.

More often than not it produced hilarious material, and I think it's a shame that none of the series have been released as CD audiobooks.
