  • BBC Music Time

Hi all — hoping this rings a bell with someone!

I’m trying to track down a primary school music programme from around 1991–1992 (UK). It was something we used in class where we’d sing along from booklets over a few weeks, then move on to a new theme.

I’m fairly sure the overall programme was BBC Music Time — the one where there were TV episodes to go along with the songs, often with children acting and singing in costume.

The specific one I remember was set in ancient China, and I think it was called something like “The Emperor and the Nightingale” (or possibly “The Emperor’s Garden”?).

    What I remember:
    • We had a song booklet we followed in class
    • The songs had a kind of “traditional Chinese” musical style
    • There was a TV programme to accompany it
    • It featured children dressed in ancient Chinese costume, acting out the story and singing the songs
One song that’s really stuck with me was about a nightingale, with lyrics along the lines of:

“In a forest by the sea,

    In a tree a nightingale…”

…and I’m almost certain it ended with something like:

    “In the Emperor’s Garden…”

I’ve found references to Music Time and even mentions of “The Emperor and the Nightingale” (around 1990), but I can’t find any actual clips or recordings.

    Does anyone else remember this?

Or even better — does anyone have a recording, lyrics, or know where a clip might exist?

This has been stuck in my head for years — would love to finally hear it again!

    Thanks
