SM:TV Live in particular was one that I wasn't a big fan of at the time, it was only looking back that I realised how good it actually was. It was one of those shows that had stuff to keep Kids happy but the interaction between the presenters in both hosting and sketches had so much adult humour it was almost shocking! Seriously, get on Youtube and search for the 'Captain Justice' skecthes, quite possibly the best thing Ant and Dec ever did.

What I miss about these kinds of shows was when an act like Trevor and Simon on Going Live/Live and Kicking or Ant and Dec on SM:TV would be mucking about in a sketch, and you would be able to hear the rest of the crew cracking up behind the cameras.

As I say. I'm talking purely from my lifetime of Saturday Morning stuff but I am aware of the likes of Swapshop, Tiswas, Mersey Pirate and Number 73. I think I went on a bit there but what has happened to the Saturday Morning shows we all watched as kids?

Is it me or nowadays do the presenters seem more interested in themselves than the programmes they are in?

That Boobah stuff is terrible. I bet it is made by the same people as tellytubbies. Utter dross. They keep saying it's especially designed for babies and pre-schoolers but it's an insult to their intellegence! When I was a baby I was watching the Clangers. I can't remember watching the Clangers at all but I'm assured that I loved it. They had to get their food from the soup dragon. Now that's a story!

I just wacthed the Gassie sketch it is very funny indeed . I love a good fart joke (farting preacher 5 had me in tears!), but what I watched that morning was just truely bizarre. I have found that it was called Boobah's. Here is an example of what I did see that morning.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJvHr...eature=related

They do briefly fly by fart propulsion in that vid almost at the end (3:12). I had to ask myself if I was still asleep! What does that teach kids? Its not even fun to watch

I also agreee about the cartoons, they are really dire from what I have seen.

For those of you sniggering about breaking wind, may I recommend a show called Gassie. It's a Lassie spoof and from the title i'm sure you can all guess Gassie's novel form of communication; and yes, it's aimed at children.

On the subject of kids enjoying old shows, or not:

I loved and was charmed by the Southern TV series, Worzel Gummidge. A year or so ago, I showed it to an eight year old who told me they couldn't really watch it. They said it was "too old and sort of slow". Now it's quite true that the print used for the DVD release is not great, especially in the early episodes, and does look 'old'. But the problem of the story being too slow is very interesting. Children these days are used to extremely fast paced drama.

There are some good quality kids programmes on tv today - Horrible Histories for example - some really clever, entertaining and educational stuff. There are lots of daft programmes too which are good fun. Where tv programming for kids breaks down I think is due to the sheer number of channels to fill. The quality of some kids cartoons in particular is apalling in my opinion. I'm thinking of stuff like The Cramp Twins and similar.

what is so entertaining about a kids show where they break wind.
    rather rude me thinks.

those of us who grew up in the seventies eighties and nineties where very lucky.
the quality of kids shows like trap door, grotbags etc.
we really where growing up in a golden age of kids telly.

i enjoy them shows mor now than i did back then.

im a bigger kid now than i was when i was a kid.

    check this one out.
    i love it.

Re: what do people think of kids tv today?

One morning over the the Christmas holiday just gone I woke up very early in the morning and I could not drop back off - so I put the TV on. It was some kids program (maybe Hoobs) but it involved them breaking wind and flying around the screen like a balloon would if you let it loose.

From what I have seen of the TV I do feel sorry for kids today - I had the real ghostbusters cartoon (one story involved them taking the alternator off the car to power something, would a modern kids show go into this depth?), Bitsa, Raggy Dolls, Rolf Harris's arts program, Art Attack, How2, an Art show on BBC1 with an elderly gent (cant think of his name) but it had Morph in it, Sooty and Sweep Show (the episode with Sweep on Stars in Your eyes had me in stitches! ), Tailspin, Trap Door, Big Bertha and lots more that I have forgot.

Kids TV today just seems to be : Weird or baffling (to me anyway!) programs like the wind breaking one mentioned above, American imports about young teenagers or action animations/live action.
