i was seven and my stepdads son took me to see Star Wars when it was rereleased in Britain for the summer of '78, it cost 50p.

it was a double feature with an italian made sci fi film called 'Humanoid' which starred richard keil who played jaws in the bond films.

i got a kia-ora to drink and some sweets. best saturday ever

At Houghton (le-Spring) we had quite a modern 1 screen cinema in a THEN new building where I saw 101 Dalmations (original) with my mam and little sister. It had a pre-film about a boy and a pigeon. At the interval my mam went for a coffee, the lady asked where she was sitting and then brought her coffee in a china cup and saucer! Its now a snooker hall (and has been for alongtime now).

I love that film. I even had the dinky toy version of Chitty with folding wings. My mum gave it to a Jumble sale a few years later along with loads of other vintage toys that are now probably worth a small fortune. Oh well.

first film im pretty sure was the neverending story.
it was in a cinema around 50 miles from where i live in a town called downpatrick.

i was ten when i saw it with my uncle so that would be 85.
    lovely old cinema it was.

if its at the cinema we're talking about, the earliest i can remember is just little snippets of Disney's Sword In The Stone, when i was about 3 or 4 (around 1984), the first films i fully remember seeing were Return to Oz and The Black Cauldron, both in 1985.

my mum and dad used to take me and my sister to loads of films, when our small town still had the 'Palace Cinema' up until 1990, when it closed down and got demolished

Its sad that so many old cinemas are now gone. Nice to hear there are a few survivors though. A lot were built in the 30's and 40's, the golden age of cinema and are decorated in Hollywood art deco style. If only for that reason they should be kept. It would be lovely to turn a few back into cinemas, showing older films on the big screen once more. I don't care how big the TV is and how impressive the sound you can't really replicate the atmosphere of the big screen. Even the fleapits had an attraction of their own. There used to be one in Coventry called Theatre One. It was going into the 90's. The place was a real mess in the end though and wasn't cleaned much. I remember going there about 1995 just before it closed as a cinema. I don't remember the film but I do remember my shoes sticking every time I put them down. No doubt a semi toxic combination of spilled Coke, hot dog fat and Popcorn. At least I hope that's all it was! They used to screen soft porn flics one afternoon a week! errrggh.

It's not been a cinema for a long time, it closed in the 90s and has been a pub and failed music venue as well as standing empty since then. Fine building though.

First one I saw was Bedknobs and Broomsticks in 1976 or 1977 at the Classic Cinema in Durham followed by Star Wars in 1977 with my friend and his mother.

First movie I saw at the cinema was E.T. at Monkseaton pictures (no longer exists). First film I went to see without an adult was 'An American Tale' at Whitley Bay Play House. The Play House still exists but has been revamped a few times over the years and I don't think it shows films any more. It's reverted to a place that actually shows plays and has live music etc.
