70s movie. Old man and grandkid going to "the blue"?

Does anyone remember a 70s road movie about and old guy and his grandkids heading across America to "the blue" (probably another name for the ocean). have tried googling to no avail!

Also another 70s movie about a guy sharing his small boat / yacht with a cat he initially disliked...remember the cat falling overboard and swimming back towards the boat...???
