1970s TV play-murder by garden shears

I'm still haunted by a 1970sTV play I was deemed too young to watch but sneaked a look at anyway.The lead character was killed, as she sat
in the living room, by a totally bald murderer (a famous character actor whose name I can't remember).He crept in through the French windows
and placed a pair of gardening shears around her neck from behind then closed them-cue gore and pretty horrific special effects.Any ideas?The
only clue I have is the name Teddy is in my mind with regards to the murderer.
