  • help with old arcade horse racing video betting terminal

does anyone remember this brilliant game, you had 3 positions to bet and there was always 8 horses in each race.

there was a list of about 100 horses named on the front of the machine....the good thing about the machine at my local arcade was that it wasn't random, the horses ran to form .

in each race there was 3 or 4 fences to jump...it would take 10p's and the prices would range from evens up to about 19/1.

the horse names i remember were, ancient lights, grey god, windy gorge, demdyke, the svengali, helmsman, hindenberg, black leg, herald angel...plus many more....anyone remember it.

I remember these, but not from arcades, more pubs & that sort of thing, but not being a gambling man, never really played them

Don't think I've ever seen the type described in the OP, just the ones where you bet on the plastic coloured horses and jockeys that ran in a straight line!

I remember a similar thing my grandparents had, and a coin operated one that paid out that you could find in arcades at the seaside. I never saw one with fences to jump though.

thx for the replies...the machine was quite a big thing where you had 3 terminals you could bet at and the video screen showing the race was up above in front of you....the horse and jockeys were tiny little things,,,,before each race , the names of the horses in that race would appear on the screen and you'd have a few seconds to place your bet....as i said earlier though , they ran to form...good and bad horses...i think "our" one must have been faulty in that regard because i saw another one time and it was totally random.....we knew the good and bad horses ....every now and then the machine would malfunction and show every horse in a given race at 19/1...in a 8 runner race!!!! in amongst the runners would be the form horse and it would invariably win....if you were there on your own you would bet it on all 3 terminals.....another quirky thing about it was you could tell when a horse was going to fall because at the previous fence it would stutter over the fence and then always fall at the next one.

I remember seeing a similar game in an arcade, but with a line of Scalextric style racing cars moving along.

I remember this game, and it has been doing my bloody head in what its called - Would love to be able to check it out again online...

I remember being very young, so it must have been very early 80's, and going into Skegness Pier and having the odd 10p on it (thats all my Mum would let me spend so quickly at the time)...

It had 3 TV screens showing the races, with the names of the horses and form for each race up for a couple of minutes, and then it would show the race....

                  Can anyone help with this???

I remember this well from working in the arcades in Blackpool in my youth. It was run via 12inch laser disc which was quite limited, hence the lack of random results. I believe there were several versions, but the one we had in our arcade, which was on South Pier, was called Triple Crown Derby.

I also remember a similar one slightly later called Steeplechase.

Thanks, mate... I'll try to check it out..

Got an old MAME arcade emulator on my laptop, so will see if the ROM website has it...

Will be reminiscing big time if this is indeed the one!

Yep I think steeplechase rings bell.....still can't find anything on it though...another bit of info is that the little cartoon horses ran from right to left...ancient lights, dembyke, grey god, helmsman, hindenberg, windy gorge, anglesey, black leg, svengali...were just a few of the names of the horses but there were many more.
