  • A black rubber strip trailing from the back of 80's jallopies??!

What were these curious wee devices that you saw trailing from the back bumper of cars in the 1980's? Some of the more upmarket ones had a bolt of electricity/lightning painted onto them. Were they to stop car sickness or excess static electricity? Why do we not see them anymore and you'd think there would be more demand for them with so many needless electrical systems in cars these days??!!

I remember they were popular in the early mid 1980s, almost every Mk3 Escort seemed to have them at one time.

I've never worked out how discharging static would reduce car sickness though.

I don't think they worked which is why we don't see too many of them these days. They became a sort of fad for some flash car drivers.

I need one of these. I get a belt of static every time I get out and touch the outside skin of the door to shut it.

Or maybe I need a computer earth strap on me as I think it's the seat fabric and my clothing that makes the static.

I could never work out how a piece of rubber would act as an anti-static strip (grounding to Earth).

I guess there were some wire inside them.
