  • B&W Minstrel Show

The whole point of the Black & White Minstrel show was in a lighter way sending up the people who would normally star in such a musical show as this with no offence intended. Sadly the show will never be broadcast again as is the case with LWT's Love Thy Neighbour of which I have the entire series on VHS

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

It was not a show I would seek out as the style of singing didn't really appeal to me. Did I find it offensive or thought it denagrated black people? No, not at all. It may sound odd, but I never associated the BW Minstrels with real-life black people; to me, they were just singers of old-fashioned songs who wore garish face make-up.

I have Love thy Neighbour on DVD. If people who throw abuse at the show as being racist and offensive would actually watch it, they would see that Eddie and Bill were as bad as each other, and it was Bill that usually got the upper hand.

I agree with you Staffslad. Eddie always showed how ignorant he was towards Bill

Had they dropped the boot polish & given themselves a name change years before history might have been kinder to them.

From the clips I've seen a lot of music they sang was popular with both blacks & whites in the USA.

I recall watching this in the 70s. I was young and did not really think about sensitive nature of the programme.
But I certainly remember 'Mind Your Language.' Now that was really funny

Allegedly one of my distant relatives was one of the original Minstrels, not sure which one or if it is actually true or not.

The B&W Minstrel Show was highly popular. Most people took no offence, realising what it really was.....an entertainment show.
Who cared about rules when you were young?

I remember seeing xlips of this in it was all right in the seventies.

I doubt it would be allowed on tv now.

Dont think they are that colour naturally, i think there faces where just made that
                  colour with makeup.
                  Perhaps im wrong though.
Pretty sure it said that on that programme.

LOOKED LIKE JUST GOOD FUN TO ME MARC.

DID YOU ACTUALLY SEE IT ON TV WHEN IT WAS SHOWN.
