  • Renault 21 & Other Sexualised TV Adverts

Various television adverts advertise products using sexualised content

For example, Renault advertised the Renault 21 in this way

I wont say here on DYR. but if you Google this advert you will see what I mean

Also the famous Cadbury Flake advert is advertised in the same way, along with the Nescafe Gold advert

The ad companies claim sex sells. Maybe they are right

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

The obvious ones are ones that advertise lingerie - Pretty Polly did a sexist sub-Carry On advert for bras. There were complaints to the ITC but they were not upheld.

There were also that one for tights with the woman's legs as the hands of the clock. There was someone who was a guest on Des O'Connor's chat show at that time who referred to it and said that he would like to see her at a quarter to three!

Paula Hamilton and that VW advert, with her dropping things on the ground before driving off. I last saw it at the Media Museum in Bradford.

I saw one for Veet and I hated the "innuendo" that happened in the advert.

I don't think that the Mates condoms one counts where the young man in the chemist and asks for cotton wool buds, tissues in a stammering and embarrassing voice, and then plucks up the courage to ask for the condoms. Cue assistant shouting loudly "Mr Jones, how much are the condoms?"

There are others, but it is rather difficult to describe them in detail on a family forum such as this one.

There is also a sexist advert for Pretty Polly tights or stockings from around 1981 which shows a Carry On film parody with a doctor who examines man's heartbeat going up via a stethoscope when he sees the legs of a woman when she climbs a stepladder to reach a high shelf. "There's no problem with your eyesight then", the doctor says.

Another advert that seems to be aimed ironically at men and giving a clinched view of female sexuality.

One really contentious ad was for Levi Jeans

A guy breaks down in the middle of nowhere, where he finds a pawn shop (as you would in the middle of the Nevada dessert lol)

He goes in and tries to pawn something, as he has no money to buy gas/petrol from the pump outside (again as you would in the middle of the Nevada dessert)

He offers his Rolex watch, but the shopkeeper shakes his head

          A gold ring? No

The shopkeepers points at his Levi jeans

          He takes off his jeans.................

Afterwards the guy fills his car up with gas

          Driving away he thinks:

"That hurts but I got a free tank of gas"

          That's my version anyway lol

Oddly I was thinking about this recently!

I think he had stopped in a small town that was just big enough to have a gas station & a pawn shop.

I'd guess about 80% of all adverts are sex based one way or another.

As a bloke I'm ok with that though

I know that it is too recent for this forum, but the Kinder Bueno advert springs to mind with the three women at the table and the waiter in his tight jeans. Seems to me as if it was a feminist Carry On film or something.

one i remember as a youth. it got loads of complaints and apparently the ad agency planned to show her (Jerry Hall) being chased by an assailant, but this was changed.

Another one I saw in the mid 80s showed a close-up of what looked like a sausage, but when the camera pulled back it was in fact a
woman in a bikini with a heavy tan! Supposedly showing how much less fat was in the food.

                      Unbelievable...

It reminds me of the early days of the internet where there was an advert that looked as if it was a picture of someone's behind, but it was a peach instead. It took a few seconds to unveil itself so that it gave viewers that impression.

Yes - it's how the word "peach" is often associated with derrieres.
