  • Heatwaves and Hot Summers

Yes - you can guess correctly the inspiration for this thread. We are having this weather - a hot (or "a scorcher" as The Sun would have said back in the 1980s) summer at the moment, but what about hot summers in the past?

The times when a Wall's Feast melted away before having a chance to bite into it; Putting the Ambre Solare on the legs and feet to avoid sunburn; Argos running out of electric desk fans to sell; females bearing a bit more than usual in the leg department; and having "can't be bothered to do any work today because of the heat" days and wishing that one was on the beach in Skegness or any other coastal resort facing the North Sea.

The big one of 1976 was a couple of years before I was born, but apparently it broke all records at the time - does anyone remember that one? Was it really all Demis Roussos and nothing else back then? And they had the cheek of giving us package holidays to Spain back then - what a pity.

Others I remember were 1990 around the start of August where the thermometers were reaching 99 degrees Fahrenheit, and whatever that was in Celsius - the staff at Mr Kipling were sent home as the factory was exceedingly warm. There was 2003 as well and that was boiling.

It's a pity that the weather forecasters don't use Fahrenheit anymore (I suppose it was the pounds and ounces of temperature measuring), and using Fahrenheit made things sound even hotter. I suppose the Met Office retired it along with Michael Fish around 15 years ago.

Quite appropriately for the "last day of June" - the day I am writing this one - I think of Bobby Goldsboro's hit Summer - The First Time which must have been risqué even by 1973 standards.

Any memories of heatwaves and hot summers in the past? Or if you like, 1976 and all that?
I've everything I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
    I'm having so much fun

    Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

Hey George, i met my girlfriend in 1976, we married in 1981 and we are still blissfully happy, yes indeed 1976 was a punishing summer with hose pipe bans and requests by the government to share a bath....kinky, but in for a penny etc. Not sure walls feast was invented so we had to make do with a jubillee (remember that?)
People would walk in the shadow cast by Demis roussos to try and keep cool, ofcourse "glamrock" was big in 1976 Slade,Mud,Gary(ahem)glitter,Sweet etc, yeah some great memories of the 70s and of 1976 inparticular, i just got back from Majorca and guess what...it was raining!

You are right about 1990 George, as well too there was 95 where so far 9and hopefuly it will remain the case, that I was un-fortunate enough to be stung by 2 Wasps in one week)

1990 was a "Classic", or at least July to August was - as as 13 year old we went to Bournemouth on holiday and the first Day was true rubbish weather-wise (the last Day of July), then it was 99 all week and was like Desert Tempertaures .... in-fact it have even hit 100 that week - it certainly eclipsed up North as was to be expected but it was an amazingly amazingly hot week in the extremes

Even my Great Auntie who was a keen Gardner amongst many other things related to the Outdoor Life, as well as a big big lover of Sunshine, who'd Garden until Dusk on a evening/night given the chance in retrospect of the fact that nothing fazed, her nearly passed out in Southsea on a Day Trip from Bournemouth to The Isle of Wight - even after riding a Ferry one with the Sea Breeze and a Catermeran the other with more Sea Breeze

Summer of '76 was also the year of the ladybird invasion

On a news report about it on Birmingham ATV television station the reporter interviewed a woman who said in a broad Brummie accent:

"They're all over the 'babbies' sloid'; they can't 'sloid' down the 'sloid'

        (Translated: Babies slide)

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

Yes, 1976 was the classic hot summer. It seemed to go on forever. The government was very worried about drought as not only was it long and hot, that summer was also very dry. Air conditioning in homes was an unimagined luxury back then and I don't think I even knew anyone who owned a fan. We had a portable fan heater that could be set to cold i.e. the element didn't get power but the fan still turned, and we used it as an electric fan, though it was next to useless unless you were within a foot of the thing. There were TV reports of very low levels in resovoirs and talk of standpipes. I don't know if any areas had standpipes, but we didn't around here. Denis Howell was appointed minister for drought, to much amusement. He revealed to reporters that he was conserving water by sharing baths with his wife and even had to do a rain dance. It must have worked as not long after his appointment it started raining.

Forgot to mention that it ended with a bang at the end of August 1976 with intense thunderstorms and very heavy rain. The ground was parched and hard, and the rainwater just ran off causing floods--Howell was quickly made minister for floods.

Vanilla this year is in short supply as South Africa is not growing enough vanilla plants to meet the demand for flavouring ice cream

1994 was another hot summer, which was good because I did my GCSEs then had a nice long break before I started at college.

All I remember of the 76 one was dry cracked patches of dirt in spots where we used to have lawn. Great for playing with my toy cars on!
