    Some of my favourites:

Why do we have an Ace instead of a 1 in a pack of cards? Offhand, I have assumed that the answer is that it is because an Ace is higher than a King rather than lower than a 2 (as Play Your Cards Right has educated us), but am I correct regarding this? The Ace certainly represents a 1, as it has just 1 diamond or spade on it.

Why do we call the slices of bread that we dip into boiled eggs "soldiers"? Is it something historic (perhaps royalty) that it comes from?

Why do we have the Red Sea and the Black Sea when the seas are obviously not that colour?

    And also...

Why does the first word of this question sounds and is actually pronounced exactly like penultimate letter of the alphabet?

Why-oh-why does the first three words sound like one and a half yoyos?

Ironically enough I saw a Boots Christmas catalogue from a couple of years ago and they did have some boots (or shoes at least) featuring on one of their pages - they might have been novelty slippers however. John Boot was the founder of Boots in Nottingham (says someone who is obviously local to the area itself). I thought that it was Jesse Boot who did the honours, although he has a local Primary School named after him rather than the big High Street chemist.

It's in the same vein that Currys don't sell curry, Birds the confectioners don't sell bird food etc. It's like an edition of That's Life! where Esther Rantzen pondered why Radio Rentals didn't rent radios anymore.

My Dad can remember when he was young his parents rented a radio until the could afford to buy one. Radio Rentals started up in the 1930s & started to rent TVs when they came along, which became their main business.

I did wonder why the BBC kept their listings magazine as the Radio Times after television started to become more popular. When ITV started they were quick to claim TV Times for their magazine.

Re: Interesting questions which go unanswered

At least with a title like the Radio Times we know that they still carry radio station listings - I often get annoyed buying other recent TV listings magazines that no radio schedules are included. The name Radio Times means that there are radio listings inside - Paul Daniels once commented that the magazine is rather out of date.

It's like something historical that gets its original meaning forgotten about as the years and decades go by, and that new generations that eventually come along are not told about why something is so named from people who have been there longer or even remember it being names itself - the Chinese Whispers effect as I often call it.

Quite often some companies, as well as things like TV programmes and the like are named after a founder's name who has been long gone many decades later, and people wonder why it has that name - in that respect, in its early years a person's name meant its founder, whereas many decades later it means a company or something which is that person's legacy and lives on long after their death. For example, would you associate the name Disney with cartoons and Mickey Mouse, or with its founder? The cartoon side of course.

I am certain that I read one of Victor Lewis-Smith's columns a few years ago where he said that he rang up a branch of Selfridges and asked if they sold fridges. I believe that he did the stunt with calling up London Zoo and asking if G Raffe and LE Fant was there.

Re: Interesting questions which go unanswered

Regarding the Boots selling boots thing, I suppose that I used to find it ironic that Sun-Day was the only day of the week that The Sun wasn't published on.

Of course, since February 2012 (and the end of the News of the World the year before), that is now not the case anymore.

And as Robin Cooper found out in his second Timewaster Letters book, Magnet sells fitted kitchens and not magnets.

And please don't make me speculate what Virgin Megastores were selling either...

What does the Carphone Warehouse sell these days?

Also, does anyone read the Radio Times (mostly) to check what is on the radio?

And of course The Orange Shop didn't sell oranges either.

I am surprised that the name Superdrug hasn't been a controversial name in that respect.

If man evolved from apes then why do we still have apes?

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?
