  • 80's/90's insults and other things

Was thinking about this yesterday and this morning. The main ones were Berk! and Wally.

These were common place when I was a kid, as in the bloke is a total berk, or he's a wally. Yet today I never ever hear them.

The other thing that was a craze in about 91 was 'itchy chin' when someone was telling a tall tale you would start scratching you chin, and say itchy chin.

This then morphed into basically calling everyone a liar all the time, as in 'I had fish fingers for tea last night" friend starts scratching their chin......it became the most annoying thing ever.

Anyhow, does anyone else have ones that have been forgotten?

One that comes to mind was calling people 'Joey' after Joey Deacon had appeared on Blue Peter in 1981. It actually mentions this on the Wikipedia page about him.

We called people who begged for crisps or sweets saffs short for saffer/saffa!
Liars were itchy beards or chinny chin chin.

A nice variation of itchy chin.

Any kid who picked up coppers off the street was called a "scrubber" and there was some fashion to throw your 1p's and 2p's away, so there were always some around the newsagents and bus stop.

I never bought into that and always stuck mine in a whisky bottle, so was called a scrubber a few times

I remember in the early 1990s at my school everyone seemed to be throwing their coppers away. Around a Children In Need Day a few people collected them all up & donated them to charity. There were a few pounds worth in total.

Polishing your nails when in the right, you would breathe on your finger nails making a 'ha' 'ha' sound then polish them on your top.

Scruffy kids were called tredges which changed to mingers as the years went on.
