    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I assume that they were aimed at those who were just about to post letters, and then realised that they had forgot to put stamps on the envelopes - or indeed, those who had forgotten to put stamps on...

And they were probably wishing they hadn't considering that some people in the country of Iceland have objected to the supermarket using that name in recent years.

I was staying in the Blackpool Pontins in 2005 (now closed, probably due to Health and Safety Reasons, and I can understand with regards to the chalet that I actually stayed in), and there was a...

Re: Being famous in the 1980s

Powell was in Grange Hill for almost the entire 1980s as Headteacher (save for 1980 and 1985 as Deputy Head) hence her inclusion. I can't stand EastEnders, so that might be one reason why Carty isn't...

Re: Being famous in the 1980s

They probably did, but I feel that atmosphere of the 1980s helped the people listed to be more successful than in previous decades. Play Your Cards Right feels better than Sunday Night at the London...

    Re: Supermarkets

Didn't Woolworths used to sell food just like a supermarket many decades ago? I am sure that I have seen adverts in late 1960s and 1970s newspapers advertising things like dog food and the like.

    Re: Supermarkets

Spar is still around, even if it is low-key in Great Britain. I suppose that it will be like C&A (and the European Union) - going strong on the continent but almost diappeared in Britain.

    Haven't...

Here is a list of the 202 most famous people of the 1980s as far as I am concerned - the list was originally to have been...

    Supermarkets

Do we really get nostalgic about supermarkets in the past because of the low prices back then, the old logos, or probably because some companies no longer exist? I would certainly say the first two...
  10. AA or RAC "pity they didn't stop for a nightcap" advert - mid to late 1980s?

There was this advert from the mid to late 1980s which involved a young couple breaking down in the middle of nowhere at night and finding their way outside some huge old haunted house which was...

Re: Ironic lyrics and titles in songs

Not quite an ironic lyric, but something involving Sir Cliff Richard which I thought I would share:

In 1985 Mike Yarwood did a celebrity "old people's home" sketch for one of his Thames comedy...

Re: Watching musicals at the theatre

Just received the Sunderland Empire version of the Fame the Musical programme - it will be very interesting to see how different (or same) the copy is compared to other theatres around the country.

    Re: 30yrs Since Hillsborough.

To people in the south, people think that Barnsley is so assertive when it comes to people who come from there, but it's just a stereotype at the end of the day.

I suppose that one of the reasons...

    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I would have thought that even in 1973 never mind 1977 or 1982, there would be very little use for a p stamp.

I thought that the cost of a first class stamp would roughly be the same price as a...

I would have thought that it would be like using a payphone and putting coins into the machine - or like Nottingham City Transport bus fares (says he, who has had a pass for over 20 years). They...

    Re: 30yrs Since Hillsborough.

My father came from Doncaster so I have a bit of South Yorkshire in my family as well - he used to say "sen" instead of "self" and all that. A friend of mine lives in Barnsley which is known for its...

    Re: 30yrs Since Hillsborough.

The name Hillsborough seems to be synonymous with the football disaster, both from a football and sporting perspective - it's as if the name only came into existence in 1989. I had never heard of...

  21. Re: Fashionable names of people mostly in the 1970s and 1980s

I would assume that a lot of them had the same or similar names to white people - this can help them when it comes to getting on in life.

More to the point, do Asian names become old-fashioned...

    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I very rarely used them, but I assume that it was a lot more useful to buy them when the Post Office was closed and not having to wait for them to open. Some might have offered single stamps as well....
  25. Re: Fashionable names of people mostly in the 1970s and 1980s

I was half expecting the swear filter to kick in when I wrote "Fanny" for some reason! I blame Julian Clary for its campness, although I assume that it had always been camp prior to his act.

    In...
