    Supermarkets

Do we really get nostalgic about supermarkets in the past because of the low prices back then, the old logos, or probably because some companies no longer exist? I would certainly say the first two...
  2. AA or RAC "pity they didn't stop for a nightcap" advert - mid to late 1980s?

There was this advert from the mid to late 1980s which involved a young couple breaking down in the middle of nowhere at night and finding their way outside some huge old haunted house which was...

Re: Ironic lyrics and titles in songs

Not quite an ironic lyric, but something involving Sir Cliff Richard which I thought I would share:

In 1985 Mike Yarwood did a celebrity "old people's home" sketch for one of his Thames comedy...

Re: Watching musicals at the theatre

Just received the Sunderland Empire version of the Fame the Musical programme - it will be very interesting to see how different (or same) the copy is compared to other theatres around the country.

    Re: 30yrs Since Hillsborough.

To people in the south, people think that Barnsley is so assertive when it comes to people who come from there, but it's just a stereotype at the end of the day.

I suppose that one of the reasons...

    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I would have thought that even in 1973 never mind 1977 or 1982, there would be very little use for a p stamp.

I thought that the cost of a first class stamp would roughly be the same price as a...

I wouldn't have known that myself of course. :)

    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I would have thought that it would be like using a payphone and putting coins into the machine - or like Nottingham City Transport bus fares (says he, who has had a pass for over 20 years). They...

    Re: 30yrs Since Hillsborough.

My father came from Doncaster so I have a bit of South Yorkshire in my family as well - he used to say "sen" instead of "self" and all that. A friend of mine lives in Barnsley which is known for its...

    Re: Maxpax drinks vending machines

I thought it was common knowledge back then - comedians used to make jokes about them. :)

    Re: 30yrs Since Hillsborough.

The name Hillsborough seems to be synonymous with the football disaster, both from a football and sporting perspective - it's as if the name only came into existence in 1989. I had never heard of...

Well, it does mention it where it says "Posts".
  13. Re: Fashionable names of people mostly in the 1970s and 1980s

I would assume that a lot of them had the same or similar names to white people - this can help them when it comes to getting on in life.

More to the point, do Asian names become old-fashioned...

    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I would prefer to wait and get stamps from a shop instead of getting them from a machine that does not give change.
  15. Being a citizen - a privilege or just a human right?

I believe that the Member's Lounge is the DYR forum's answer to Speaker's Corner, and so I just thought that I would write about something here that I feel passionate about, as a person with human...

    Re: Stamp Vending Machines

I very rarely used them, but I assume that it was a lot more useful to buy them when the Post Office was closed and not having to wait for them to open. Some might have offered single stamps as well....
  17. Re: Fashionable names of people mostly in the 1970s and 1980s

I was half expecting the swear filter to kick in when I wrote "Fanny" for some reason! I blame Julian Clary for its campness, although I assume that it had always been camp prior to his act.

    In...
  18. Re: Fashionable names of people mostly in the 1970s and 1980s

As I said before, it's interesting that female names date more than male names do - watching the first series of A House Through Time, the male Faulkner Street occupants in the 19th century had the...

    Sticky: Re: Old Skool Packaging

Further to the 1967 crisp packet from last year, I saw in the news that a washed up Coca Cola can from 1988 was found on a beach near Edinburgh (the can had the Seoul Olympics sponsorship on the side...

    Re: Britain in the 60s

I don't think that they really collected the Beatles to be honest - I did ask my late father once and he said just that. They could have sold out too quickly, but as it was before I was born, I...

Re: What was cheaper in the 1970s?

Whatever happened to stamp vending machines, indeed? Quite a few post boxes (mostly the ones outside Post Offices) had them on the side of the box. I think that they sold them in books of four,...
