  • Death of the Ford Mondeo - goodbye to him/her

I have read in the Newspaper today that Ford are finishing making the Ford Mondeo! As n immense Ford lover since a young young age - I have seen many of the varying Cars come and go as well as the Family owning many and my Mum/Dad owning two differing generations of Ford Escort

Now the Orion has gone as has the Ford escort - this discredits such ana amazing British Car maker that was famous Worldwide in it's as being made primilary in Dagenham.

I can see Company's points about making savings as Ford say's, but people will always need Cars - at least fot the next 100/150 years I'd say, but to axe making the Ford Mondeo is just utterly beyond belief and words stagger me as to why!! He/She was an name of legend when it took over from the equalu ledgenary Sierra in the early to mid 90s (which was either 92 or 93 if ia m not wrong - though I am past willing to stand corrected on it's year of birth)

Why on earth though axe making such a brilliant Motor is beyond me - the Mondeos held real class even as far back as the early 90s in the fact they had everything modern you could dream of and ran forever (as many had a first life as a Buisnessman's Car or a Rep's Car as my Father's Partner had one through work going miles of the North of England) and many just literally ran forever and still are .... agreed they obtained very high mileage as I have found upon viewing and buying 2nd hand purchases - where I am talking 93'000 to 120k/140k but this choice by ford is baffling, stuipd and crazy in the extreme I feel

They will loose any credentials in regard to new Cars through this I think as the Fiesta is only a small Car and the Galaxy is more "People-Carrier style", other than those 2 I'd struggle to name many more par the Ka, which is in the same Leauge (as good as the Leauge of small Cars like the Fiesta is) if even it is not in another Leauge - as it is smaller in many way's than the Fiesta. Though to think Ford had such an amazing beast that has stood the test of 25 years or near on with Mondeo and the fact you still see many mid to late 90s on the Roads is testamount to taking on the "Buisness-man's Car Leauge" with Rover and BMW, Mrec etc - but now though i'll always always remain a firm, firm ford lover and fan - this move will just ruin such a great, great name I feel and think and honestly sadly believe (though I truly truly hope I am wrong here, but just can not see a point of return if they go-ahead with this utterly stupid move and idea).

What Ford are to axe Mondeo!!! WOW! This is news to me. I remember when the Mondeo came out in March 1993, What car gave a Mondeo free video with the mag (which i still have). I have had afew Mondeos over the years. Still i feel that Mondeo was no Cortina, and people today want crossovers. sad really that Mondeo man is no more.

According to Tuesday's Daily Star EscortEclipse yeah it say's so - though most of it seems based on Cost-cutting, which I see no benefit for Ford axing such a ledgend this way

Though the Daily star is not the best Newspaper going - it is related to the Daily express and it's group and I generaly but either one or the other/or both, so given it's relationship with the Daily express I am going to trust their reporting here (though hopefuly I am wrong - but can not see it being wrong)

Wasn't it referred to as the Mundano when it came out due to the boring look of it?

It was referred to as the Cortina of the 1990s because it replaced the Sierra which in turn replaced the Cortina.

It's amazing how 1990s cars still look modern and stylish now (compared to 1970s cars back then).

My dad had Cortinas as company cars back in the day, Marks I, II and III!

I got the impression that cars like the Mondeo don't sell as well these days, people either want something more "prestige" or a "soft roader".

My Dad had a Mondeo for years, & it surprised me when he replaced it with a Nissan Qashqai.

I am unsure to be frank/fair here Mulletino mate - may-be in australia (if you was there when it launched it had bad reviews) but i remember (may-be through Rose Tinted shades ... I dunno) it being looked upon as an extremley posh Siera - which as later Ford Escorts had parts that was aligned to the making of Siera's , I guess the bad reviews are not far from wrong in a way possibly

Nah I was in the UK. Perhaps it was because it was a "Safe" Rep or Company Car? Maybe it was just me and my mates then! XD

I do remember when the Sierra's came out and people referred to them as "Jelly Moulds", one drove into the back of my Dad's 70s Daimler Double Six, the Daimler barely had a scratch, the Sierra folded right in at the front.

                    Hi Mulletino mate

Wiki has said similar that they got a bad press - generally I trust them, but they do appear to be "in-acurate" on certain points/pointers occasionaly I think though

My Mum said similar here Richard - from either a differing paper or online as to what you say - but i think/thought that generally Ford with their more say 2prestige makes" like Mondeo and later Ford Escort and Orions that these did challenge the more up-market buisnessman Cars like Vauxhall's and Rover in the 1990s - but I recall old Rovers pre 1995 being well well rubbish and looking past dated (especialy in the sunday Mags as a a 2 page advert) but then again so was the last generation Granada - which my Mum owned for a day until her Partner ordered it to go back to where she bought it from as it was a potiental death trap (and that was only in about 1998 or so)!

Infact I bet she/we even only owned it for 45 minutes - let alohne a day!!

^ we had an old Granada Ghia MKI that also turned out to be a death trap, didn't find out till we went to sell it, was three cars welded together!

Not sure if you are old enuff Mulletino but I rode on the old Red Rattler trains for many years. Smelly, noisy, dirty and slow.. nothing good to say about them in fact. This is how they looked... would be late 1970s I am guessing. They were phased out..finally..in 1992. (See clip)

The market has changed. There is no longer a big demand for D segment cars from mainstream brands. SUVs/crossovers unfortunately take a big slice of the market and those D segment cars that do sell tend to be from premium brands. Look how the Accord was axed in Europe and the Avensis and Tipo (is this C segment?) are also going. Not sure what the French are doing but big Renault/Peugeot/Citroen saloons/hatchbacks used to be everywhere but not now. I always liked the Mondeo (and the Sierra and Cortina before it) but it looks like cars like these are no longer that popular with buyers.

nah mate, I didn't move to Australia till 2005.

Those trains look cool though, I used to enjoy riding the British Rail ones that had separate compartments on each carriage with a door each side, made it hard for ticket inspectors though.
