    The Townsend Thoresen ferry capsized at Zeebrugge in March.
    The Conservatives won a third term in the general election in June.
    One day in August Michael Ryan shot numerous people before eventually shooting himself.
    Share prices went tumbling one Monday in October, so the day was dubbed Black Monday.
    BP shares were sold to the public in the autumn with the slogan "Be Part Of It".
    A great storm swept southern England one Thursday night in October causing widespread damage (e.g. 6 of the oaks at Sevenoaks were uprooted).
    A fire broke out at Kings Cross Underground station one evening in November.

    Other
    The Eurovision Song Contest took place at Palais de Centenaire, Brussels, Belgium on Saturday, 9 May.
    The UK's entry "Only the light" sung by Rikki finished 13th out of 22 entries with just 47 points.
    Ireland won with "Hold Me Now" sung by Johnny Logan (172 points) - he's still the only singer to have won the Contest more than once.
