    catchphrase.

here re the opening credits from the 1987 series.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDStrRHlyj4

it was originally hosted by roy walker.

it was a guessing game where different screens came up and u had to say what u see.
each screen u guessed correctly you earned more money.
it was one contestant against another.
the best way was to go through the m square.
in a vertical diagonal or horizontal way.
the winner went on to the super catchphrase with the chance to win a holiday.

Now that Challenge is on Freeview I'll have to keep a look out for the one with the infamous "Snake Charmer" puzzle.

you will be watching a lot of episodes just to find that particular catchphrase.

It was quite entertaining but why did he have to shout all the time?

                  Re: catchphrase

It seems a lot easier now that it was back in the day, I like at the end when the person wins the holiday and Roy says "ooh youll need some spending money...heres a grand oh and youll need some new clothes heres another grand" then "oh is this your wife? heres a grand for her"
Some other bloke did it after Roy and i remember their was a episode when he broke his ankle live on air tripping down the stairs.

"It's good, but it's not right.". what a classic catchphrase by Roy walker.
Nick Weir took over from Roy in 2000. Nick broke his foot/ankle on his debut show.http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJhHTnBWc6M
Audiences missed Roy walker and in a last ditch attempt, itv moved the show to a new daytime slot with Nick being replaced in 2002 by mark curry.
After 17 years The series ended from dwindling audience numbers.

if the above link does not work try this one http://youtu.be/oJhHTnBWc6M

Roy Walker was Catchphrase. I must have stopped watching it when the others took over as I can't remember either of them presenting it.

                        Re: catchphrase

why did nick take over from roy in 2000 i wonder.
but yes roy was catchphrase and of course a fellow northern irelander.

but roy just had a way a certain sense of humour the later hosts did not.
