Woman in fright wig driving a Land Rover

Alright, first post and lets see if anyone can put a name to an early memory that I've been trying to identify for years. This would have been shown on British TV (probably BBC) around the mid-late 80's and was probably a late night TV thriller, though could also have been a movie. My memories are of a woman with a purple fright wig and shades turning up in various locations in a Land Rover in advance of some grizzly murder. Very dark and atmospheric with lots of use of silhouette. Think it may have concluded that it was actually a man dressed as a woman. Scared the **** out of me as a kid. Anyone?

Sounds like Dressed To Kill but in this Michael Caine wore a blond wig and dark glasses to commit the murders

Definitely not Dressed To Kill, though there were similarities and it probably did provide some inspiration. Caine was very obviously a man posing as a woman in DTK whereas this was less obvious in the the current piece.
