  • 1980(ish) television series set 'down under' with kids and a volcano?

    Hello all,

Can anyone remember a series where there was a boy and a girl on an island, I think, and a volcano was threatening to erupt?

It was live-action, and I think it aired in 1980, and I'm sure it was set in New Zealand. The island was populated (not a desert island), but it was 'olden days' I think. I think the lad was blond and wore braces. I seem to remember an innocent little romance between the boy and girl which both fascinated and disgusted me as a ten-year-old viewer. I think the boy was hated by the girl's father. There was a large wooden house with a little wooden bridge over a river. Maybe a water wheel too?

I'd love to find out about it, because I missed the final episode by going on holiday with my Grandma. No video in those days, and she promised me we'd watch it in the caravan, but broke her promise once we were away. Grrr.

Hmmm. Thank you. I've read the wiki entry and watched some Youtube clips and I'm not so sure it's this. I can see an episode title mentions a volcano, but I don't remember monsters really. Or modern-day (80s) cars and stuff. I could be misremembering it, of course, but my memory of childhood is pretty strong.

I'm quite sure it was set before cars and planes. The 1800s? And I don't think there was monster menace. Just ordinary lives and relationships (I suppose similar in feel to the tedious Heidi show), and an overbearing man/father/grandfather. Do I remember him beating the boy? I think the main dread was the impending eruption of a volcano.

      Jamo.

        Sixtyten,

It's come to me. I kept trying things like Children of the Volcano, and suddenly it hit me. Children of Fire Mountain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_of_Fire_Mountain

And a look at a Youtube clip reminded me there were maoris in it. Wow. Reading the wiki entry brought enough of it back.

        Thanks for looking, everyone.
