The Eurovision Song Contest came from Palais des Congrès, Paris.
Israel won with 157 points: "A-Ba-Ni-Bi" sung by Izhar Cohen and the Alphabeta.
The UK's entry was "The Bad Old Days" sung by Co-Co; it finished 11th with 61 points (said to be quite poor at the time).
Norway finished last with nul points: "Mil Etter Mil" sung by Jahn Teigen.

The film Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, came out on 16 June 1978, and was outstandingly popular at UK cinemas (so I heard).

The 11th staging of the FIFA World Cup, took place in Argentina between 1 June and 25 June. 16 countries qualified for the tournament, Argentina won. England failed to qualify for it.

    UK number one singles included:
"Take A Chance On Me" - Abba
    "Wuthering Heights" - Kate Bush
"Rivers Of Babylon / Brown Girl In The Ring" - Boney M
"Summer Nights" - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John
