    The Eurovision Song Contest came from Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland for the third time in four years.
    • This was also Ireland's fourth time of hosting the Contest in five years.
    • The UK won with "Love Shine A Light" sung by Katrina and The Waves, scoring a record breaking 227 points.
    • Host country Ireland finished a distant second with 157 points: "Mysterious Woman" sung by Marc Roberts.
    • Two countries finished joint last with nul points: Norway: "San Francisco" sung by Tor Endresen and Portugal: "Antes Do Adeus" sung by Célia Lawson.
    • Televoting was piloted in five countries: UK, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The remaining countries continued to use Jury voting.


    Teletubbies, produced by Ragdoll Productions, launched on BBC TV in the spring. Although really aimed at pre-school children, it became a cult among university and college students.

    The UK General Election was held on 1 May 1997, and Labour swept to power with a landslide victory.

    The BBC's 24-hour news channel BBC News 24 launched on 9 November 1997, on analogue cable only. However overnight coverage was available on BBC1 during overnight downtime.

    Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997.
    • Her funeral took place at Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997.
    • Elton John re-wrote "Candle In The Wind", and sung it at the funeral.
    • When Candle In The Wind 97 was released as a tribute single, it went straight to number one and became the best selling single of 1997.

    • Teletubbies - "Teletubbies Say Eh Oh"
