Anybody know this song from around 1974?

I remember a song that got played a bit on commercial radio in around 1973 or 1974. I think the chorus sounded like "Ask the five" or "After 5" and the backing track sounded like a pre-taster to Suzi Quatro's "If You Can't Give Me Love". It was sung by a guy who sounded like he was in his late 30's with a wispy nasally voice and some female backing vocals on the chorus.

I tried asking about it on the 45cat.com site, but nobody knew who it was. Someone thought it was Smokie, but they were wrong.
