  • Chinn & Chapman

Who here likes their music? In the 70's they were the equivalent of the Stock, Aitken & Waterman production team in the sense that they knew how to write catchy and memorable songs and rack up hit after hit with them.

They first came together in 1970 when Brisbane lad Mike Chapman was working as a waiter in a London restaurant to supplement the income for his musical pursuits and was in a struggling semi-famous band called Tangerine Peel at the time. Nicky Chinn was a customer there and they got talking about music and decided to write some songs together to shop to record labels.

Their first major success was a song called "Funny Funny" which was given to a fledgling teen pop band The Sweet, and on the heels of it came 10 years of fast and furious musical excitement writing and producing songs for Mud, Smokie, Sweet, Arrows, Suzi Quatro, and Racey. In the late 70's, Chapman decided to move to America to replicate the success they'd had in the UK, and ended up producing million selling songs for Blondie, Nick Gilder, The Knack, Exile, Divinyls, Nervous Rex, and finally with Australian rockers Baby Animals in 1991 before taking a sabbatical from the music scene. Chinn disappeared from the music scene in the early 80's after splitting with Chapman. The last hit single written by them was "Better Be Good To Me" by Tina Turner from the show Miami Vice.

Chapman has returned to the pop music world in the last few years discovering new young talent on sites like MySpace producing sister fronted band Arcadian Kicks, folky chanteuse Nell Ryder, Australian rock gal Nat Allison, actor Sarah Jeanette, and renewing his working relationship with Suzi Quatro.

I really like suzi quatro even now. Her music never sounded manufactured in the way that a lot of SAW music does. She's still going strong! Chinn and Chapman wrote and produced some iconic music.
    Heaven knows I'm miserable now.

I agree! Suzi Quatro is still live and kicking. Her recent album "In The Spotlight" which came out in August last year was produced by Mike Chapman and released on retro indie label Cherry Red Records. Mike wrote 4 out of the 11 tracks - the glam rock opener "A Girl Like Me", the ballads "Spotlight" and "Whatever Love Is" and the Nirvana-ish "Rosie Rose" about her cult following with lesbian fans.

Nicky Chinn recently returned to writing pop songs, and his most recent success was with Selena Gomez.

Obvs, I love their Sweet work - also Mud and Suzi - but they were responsible for some dire stuff too! Step forward Racey & Smokie!
