      Re: Bank Holidays

I don't really remember much special happening on Bank Holidays, aside from a day off school - which were often in the school holidays in any case - so I didn't really notice them. We never went out anywhere on those days, as the roads in and out of York were pretty much a car park, especially the A64 to Scarborough and the A166 to Bridlington, where it seemed the whole of the North and West Ridings headed for - which is still the case today. When I was older, as I had an evening paper round, there were still papers printed on bank holidays, so I had to go and do the deliveries, so it pretty much wrote the day off in terms of being able to plan anything else. Later, I was at University in Scotland, there were sometimes slightly different bank holidays (or possibly local holidays) to those in England, which we usually were expected to continue our studies as normal if they fell during term time.

The other memory of bank holidays was that people always made a point of saying it would pour down as "it always rains on bank holidays"; and my mum complaining that the news or her favourite programme had been moved from its usual timeslot because it was a bank holiday! (Mind you, some things never change, these two points are still valid today!)

        Re: Bank Holidays

I used to be bored stiff when a Bank Holiday came around - no shops open; Sunday service on buses; nothing to do. Just like a Sunday in a way.

At least there would be a James Bond or Superman film on the television (cue DFS and sales adverts in the commercial breaks) - and now they just put ordinary weekday programmes on now.

Mind you, as a snooker fan, at least we have the conclusion of the final at the Crucible on the May Day Bank Holiday, and my birthday falls on the August Bank Holiday if the 30th falls on a Monday, please note. (I do a bit of travelling just before that day, such as visiting the Newlyn Fish Festival in Cornwall...)

And it's great when there is a Royal Wedding or a Queen's Jubilee that is an official Bank Holiday. A one off thing rather than an annual thing.

I suppose I find it less boring these days than I would have done so back in the 1980s.

Yes - apart from the premiere of the Dad's Army film (in which a family member was actually an extra in it, I kid you not), and an hour long Coronation Street in order to accommodate it, ITV's schedule looked exactly like an ordinary Monday schedule - even the 6.00 pm regional news was half an hour long for the first time - I know that it wasn't a Bank Holiday in Scotland, but I think that they have given up now. Even in the previous decade things were a lot better.

Every august bank holiday up until 2010 my four brothers and myself would make a 3 day vigil to Scarborough where we would get leathered and make some memories, i just love the east coast of Yorkshire.
