Favourite Books or stories from childhood.....

Ok ladies and gentlemen, what were your favorite books, or stories from your youth?

Some of mine were:

1. Stig of the Dump - read this in junior school.
2. Digby the Biggest Dog in the World - saw the film, my dad bought me the paperback.
3. Dr Who and the Daleks - My nan bought me this, how kool.
4. Spy Stories for Boys - My dad bought me this, a collection of spy/adventure/war stories.
5. Adventures of the five and a half gang (?) - an old neighbour bought me this, Famous 5 kinda book.

(And more that I can only recall fragments of, and no titles, that comes of age i guess.)

1) The Secret Island by Enid Blyton.... searched high and low till I found this for our eldest... who also loves it!
2) The Gift from Winklesea.....this touched me... strange!
3) The Highwayman..... the poem... Nan introduced me to the beauty of poetry.

as I was a precocious and avid reader then books like Jane Eyre and Shakespeare were always welcome.

The highway man poem , GREAT example of poetry , this was the first poem i ever enjoyed , it was at school and i never forgot it , then when i was in guildford one dat i saw it written in brick on the side of a huge restaurant building , this kind of inspired me to knock a few poems of my own out bless

The Iron Giant by Ted Hughes - specifically the one we read in school in the early 70s when, in the illustrations, the giant had curly iron hair!

The Iron Giant rocks, wasn't there a sequel the Iron Lady? Loved the cartoon Iron Giant film too, a missed classic.

The Vardo books

and Dumpling - a story about a girl called Annabelle who buys a pony but wants the fattest most clumsy one there....Dumpling is ridiculed but had 2 bumps on each side of her head which are her "wings" - and goes on to win. It was my Mums when she was a child but I loved it. Can't remember the author though, it's in the attic somewhere

My favourite book ever is 'Wuthering Heights'.

I read it first when I was about twelve and have seen every film and tv version ever made.

Jennings Goes to School - Still the funniest book I have ever read.

The Silver Sword - A great wartime drama for kids

Now we are 6 - When we were very Young - by A A Milne. Delightful books and I still remember great tracts of them.

school was sooo long ago now but the books that have stayed with me are:
Stig of The Dump
The Fatties & The Skinnies....never seen or heard of this since the early 70's
all the Ladybird books

mid70s onwards I was comic mad..Shiver & Shake, Topper, Beezer, Knockout, then onto Warlord, Victor, Battle (my fav)

As an adult my fav read has to be Great Expectations
