Re: Computer games and their music.

I loved my Master System (and still have a decent collection of Master System games for the Power Base Converter for my Mega Drive) but was always a bit disappointed with its weak sound chip. I think the Zilog CPU also did the Master System's sound. Despite being the older system the NES seemed to have much better sound. I was even more disappointed when I discovered that for the Japanese Master System there is an add on that gives the console FM sound that is almost as good as the Mega Drive's sound. You can see videos of the Master System games in FM on You Tube and the FM sound makes a huge difference for the atmosphere in games like Outrun and R Type.

The RetroN5 console has almost every cartridge slot on it except the Master System but you can play Master System games on it through the Mega Drive slot if you have a Power Base Converter and interestingly enough it plays the Master System games in FM if it was an FM compatible game. I watched a vid on You Tube and the guy was playing Outrun on it with the Power Base Converter and it was playing the FM sound. I really want to get myself one of those RetroN5s. Would be great to have an all in one like that and it's compatible with all the old control pads too.

When I got my Master System I would have happily paid an extra £20 or whatever to have the FM sound chip.

Us Europeans made the Master System a success yet the Japanese never seem to respect the European market. They favour the Yanks despite us having more then double the population.

I remember only really liking the stage they did where you controlled a spaceship - was like a scramble clone.

The console market can be interesting with some systems being more popular in some places than others.

IIRC the Mega Drive sold better in Europe compared to the SNES, which was more popular in the USA & Japan.

This is the bit I meant:

I'm afraid I'd never be able to keep pace with a game like this nowadays!

I liked the music to both Rainbow Road courses in Mario Kart SNES and Mario Kart 64.

Going back a bit but I just loved the opening music to the arcade game "Pheonix", I played it a lot whilst on a school trip to Majorca, 1981 !!

The in-game music from Black Lamp was pretty catchy and sounds like it was pushing the Speccy 128's sound chip to the limit:

                              Fab soundtrack indeed.
