mid 80s BBC drama set in Wales (?)

Hello. This is the only one I haven't been able to put a name to. Can you help?!
Three or four part story. Set in Wales (The Valleys?)
Boy lives in Valleys. Has a collie dog. Father is a farmer. One day they go out for a walk
into mining landscape. Boy throws a ball, it falls into a lake. Dog goes after ball. Dog seems
to struggle out of the water. Boy goes in to rescue dog. Dog sadly dies/drowns.
Boy gets out but is ill. Gets to hospital. Turns out he is slowly being poisoned.
Remaining episodes the other characters try to find out what is being dumped/spilled
into the water by whom in order to make an antidote (?)
I think it has a happy ending

This sounds familliar. I think it sounds like one of those Childrens Film Foundation Films that CBBC used to put on 4:30 Fridays, They called it The Friday Film Special.

The Battle Of Billy's Pond has a similar theme of chemicals being dumped & entering watercourses.

I'm sorry if this is classified as something of a necro of a thread but I wanted to add to this one.

I've been looking for this for years, a few bits come to mind that I remember.

The chemical in the pond was from a canister that had in large red letters 'TOXIC' it had somehow fallen out of a vehicle, found by some kids who threw it in a pond and then threw stones at it until it sank releasing the chemical inside. One character went swimming in the pond and got very badly ill and I believe died.

The only other thing I remember is a scene was filmed at the old Farthing Corner services on the M2 in Kent.

My own google-fu has also failed me.

The Country Boy was mentioned on the old TV Cream website although I don't remember it myself.

For some reason, the Grange Hill episodes where Roland's year go to Wales in 1983 came to mind when I saw the title - either that or something seen on S4C.
